Align Your Licensure to California Standards
California requires an MSW and state licensure for most clinical social work roles. Confirm your credentials are eligible for LCSW or ASW registration before applying, as Sutter Health's postings typically specify licensure tier and supervised hours requirements.
Target Roles in Sutter's Acute Care Settings
Sutter Health's sponsorship activity for Social Workers concentrates in hospital-based positions handling case management and discharge planning. Filtering your search to inpatient or acute care roles increases your chances of landing a position where sponsorship is an established practice.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Sponsorship-Verified Openings
Not every Social Worker posting at Sutter Health will explicitly state visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to surface roles where Sutter has an active sponsorship history, so you're applying to positions where the process is already understood internally.
Initiate H-1B Conversations Before the March Lottery Deadline
If you need H-1B sponsorship, Sutter Health must register you with USCIS before the March cap-subject lottery window. Raise sponsorship explicitly during the offer stage, not after signing, to leave enough lead time for legal review and PERM or H-1B preparation.
Understand How PERM Affects Your Green Card Timeline
EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship for Social Workers typically requires a PERM labor certification filed with DOL before USCIS can adjudicate your immigrant petition. For Indian and Chinese nationals, priority date backlogs can extend this timeline by years, so factor that into your planning early.
Prepare Clinical Documentation That Supports Specialty Occupation Arguments
USCIS scrutinizes social work H-1B petitions because the role can appear generalist. Gather evidence that your position requires a specific MSW specialization, such as medical social work or psychiatric social work, to strengthen the specialty occupation classification in your petition.

Does Sutter Health sponsor H-1B visas for Social Workers?
Yes, Sutter Health has sponsored H-1B visas for Social Worker roles. Sponsorship is more common for hospital-based positions in acute care, case management, and behavioral health settings within their Northern California network. If you're in active discussions with a Sutter recruiter, raise sponsorship directly during the offer stage so the legal team can assess eligibility before the annual H-1B registration window opens in March.
How do I apply for Social Worker jobs at Sutter Health?
Applications go through Sutter Health's careers portal, where postings are listed by facility and department. Search for titles like Medical Social Worker, Clinical Social Worker, or Care Transitions Specialist. Tailor your application to the specific patient population and setting listed in the posting. Migrate Mate can help you identify which open roles at Sutter have a sponsorship history before you apply.
Which visa types does Sutter Health commonly use to sponsor Social Workers?
Sutter Health sponsors Social Workers on both nonimmigrant and immigrant visa pathways. The H-1B is the primary work visa for specialty occupation roles requiring an MSW. For longer-term sponsorship, Sutter has filed under EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant categories, which require a PERM labor certification through the Department of Labor before USCIS adjudicates the immigrant petition.
What qualifications does Sutter Health expect for Social Worker roles?
Most postings require a Master of Social Work degree and California licensure, either as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or an Associate Social Worker working toward full licensure. Hospital-based roles typically expect experience in case management, discharge planning, or behavioral health. Proficiency with electronic health records and familiarity with Medicare and Medi-Cal documentation standards are commonly listed as practical requirements.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Social Worker position at Sutter Health?
For H-1B sponsorship, the timeline depends on whether you need a cap-subject slot, which is awarded through a lottery each April with an October 1 start date. If you're already on H-1B with another employer, a transfer can happen faster. Green Card sponsorship through PERM typically adds one to two years for the labor certification alone, with additional time for USCIS adjudication after that.
