Verify Your ECFMG Certification Before Applying
International medical graduates must hold active ECFMG certification before Sutter Health can initiate any visa sponsorship. Confirm your certification is current and that your medical school credentials are on file with ECFMG before submitting applications.
Target Sutter Regions With Active Physician Shortages
Sutter Health operates across dozens of Northern California communities, and physician need varies by region. Rural and underserved service areas within the Sutter network often move faster through the hiring process, which directly affects how quickly sponsorship paperwork gets initiated.
Understand the J-1 Waiver Pathway Before Negotiating Offers
If you completed a residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, you'll need a waiver before Sutter Health can sponsor an H-1B. Conrad 30 state waivers tied to underserved California communities are one path. Clarify your waiver status with USCIS before offer negotiations begin.
Ask HR Explicitly About PERM Timeline Expectations
For EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, PERM labor certification through DOL is the first major step and can take well over a year. Ask Sutter Health's physician recruitment team directly whether they initiate PERM concurrently with H-1B sponsorship or only after a set employment period.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Internal Medicine Roles
Physician openings at Sutter Health are posted across multiple channels and can be hard to track. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Internal Medicine Physician positions at Sutter Health that include visa sponsorship, so you're only applying where sponsorship is confirmed.
Align Your Board Certification Status With Sponsorship Timing
Sutter Health typically requires board certification or active board eligibility for Internal Medicine Physicians. If you're board eligible and sitting for exams, align your H-1B cap filing timeline with your certification window so your credentials are complete before USCIS adjudicates the petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sutter Health sponsor H-1B visas for Internal Medicine Physicians?
Yes, Sutter Health sponsors H-1B visas for Internal Medicine Physicians. The H-1B is the most common nonimmigrant work visa used for physician roles in the United States, and Sutter Health has a documented history of filing H-1B petitions for this specialty. Sponsorship is typically initiated after an offer is extended and contingent on confirming the role meets H-1B specialty occupation requirements.
How do I apply for Internal Medicine Physician jobs at Sutter Health?
You can browse open Internal Medicine Physician positions through Sutter Health's careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers in healthcare. Once you identify a relevant opening, submit your CV, cover letter, and ECFMG certification documentation. Physician recruitment at Sutter Health typically involves a credentialing review before formal interviews are scheduled.
Which visa types does Sutter Health commonly sponsor for Internal Medicine Physicians?
Sutter Health sponsors both nonimmigrant and immigrant visa categories for Internal Medicine Physicians. The H-1B is the primary work visa used, allowing renewable three-year periods of employment. For permanent residence, Sutter Health has sponsored physicians through EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based Green Card categories, with PERM labor certification through the Department of Labor as the starting point for most cases.
What qualifications does Sutter Health expect from Internal Medicine Physician candidates seeking sponsorship?
Sutter Health expects candidates to hold an MD or DO degree, have completed an accredited Internal Medicine residency program, and hold active ECFMG certification if they graduated from a non-U.S. medical school. Board certification or documented board eligibility in Internal Medicine is standard. An active California medical license, or confirmation that the licensing process is underway, is required before any sponsorship filing can proceed.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Internal Medicine Physician at Sutter Health?
H-1B processing through USCIS takes roughly three to six months with standard service, or two to four weeks with premium processing, which many healthcare employers use to meet start-date commitments. If Sutter Health also initiates a PERM-based Green Card process, that adds a separate Department of Labor timeline of one to two years before an immigrant visa petition can be filed. Starting the credentialing and licensing process early reduces overall delays significantly.
