Tips for Finding Nursing Assistant Jobs at Sutter Health
Verify Your Nurse Aide Certification First
California requires Nursing Assistants to hold a Certified Nurse Aide credential through the California Department of Public Health. Get your CNA certification sorted before applying, since Sutter Health screens for active state certification at the application stage, not after an offer.
Target Sutter's High-Volume Acute Care Facilities
Sutter Health's acute care hospitals in Sacramento and the Bay Area post Nursing Assistant openings more consistently than its outpatient sites. Concentrating your search on those facilities improves your odds of finding a role attached to an active sponsorship budget.
Understand How EB-3 Filing Works for Clinical Support Roles
Nursing Assistant positions typically sponsor through the EB-3 unskilled or skilled worker category, which requires PERM labor certification through the DOL. That process can take 12 to 18 months before USCIS ever sees your petition, so factor that into your timeline.
Ask About H-1B Sponsorship Eligibility During Interviews
H-1B sponsorship for Nursing Assistants is less common than EB-3 because the role must meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria. If you hold a relevant bachelor's degree and the job description reflects specialized responsibilities, raise the question directly with the recruiter before assuming the answer is no.
Align Your Application With Sutter's Staffing Cycles
Healthcare systems typically ramp hiring in late summer and early fall ahead of winter patient volume increases. Submitting applications in July through September puts you in front of Sutter Health recruiters when sponsorship-eligible headcount is most likely to be open.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Sponsorship-Verified Openings
Browsing general job boards makes it hard to know which Nursing Assistant postings at Sutter Health are genuinely open to visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to surface roles where the employer has an active sponsorship history for this specific function, saving you time before outreach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sutter Health sponsor H-1B visas for Nursing Assistants?
Sutter Health has sponsored H-1B visas for Nursing Assistants, though it is not the most common pathway for this role. H-1B eligibility depends on whether the specific position meets USCIS specialty occupation requirements, which typically involves a direct connection between the duties and a bachelor's-level field of study. Candidates with relevant degrees should raise this directly with the hiring team during the offer stage.
How do I apply for Nursing Assistant jobs at Sutter Health?
Applications go through Sutter Health's careers portal, where you can filter by role and region. You'll need an active California CNA certification and current BLS certification to be considered. Once you identify an open role, applying directly through the portal and following up with the recruiter is the most effective approach. You can also use Migrate Mate to find Sutter Health Nursing Assistant openings that are flagged for visa sponsorship before you apply.
Which visa types does Sutter Health commonly use to sponsor Nursing Assistants?
EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM labor certification is the most common pathway for Nursing Assistant roles at Sutter Health, given that the position typically falls under the unskilled or semi-skilled worker category. H-1B sponsorship is possible in some cases, particularly for candidates whose educational background supports a specialty occupation argument. Both pathways require employer initiation, so confirming sponsorship intent before or during the offer process is essential.
What qualifications does Sutter Health expect for Nursing Assistant roles?
At a minimum, you'll need a valid California CNA certification issued through the California Department of Public Health, current BLS certification, and prior clinical experience in an acute care or long-term care setting. Sutter Health also values familiarity with electronic health records and the ability to work rotating shifts. Candidates applying for sponsorship should be prepared to document their credentials thoroughly, since those records feed directly into the PERM or H-1B petition.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Nursing Assistant at Sutter Health?
For EB-3 sponsorship, the PERM labor certification through the DOL typically takes 12 to 18 months, followed by USCIS petition processing and, depending on your country of birth, a potentially long wait for a visa number to become current. H-1B processing under regular service is typically 3 to 6 months, with premium processing available to USCIS for faster adjudication. Starting conversations about sponsorship early in the offer process gives both sides time to plan realistically.
