Align your portfolio to hardware product lines
Microsoft hires Mechanical Engineers primarily for Surface devices, HoloLens, Xbox hardware, and data center infrastructure. Tailor your portfolio to show CAD, thermal management, or manufacturing experience that maps directly to one of these product families.
Target roles with explicit sponsorship language
Not every Mechanical Engineer posting at Microsoft includes sponsorship. Filter for roles that explicitly state visa sponsorship eligibility in the job description before investing time in a full application and referral outreach.
Prepare credentials before recruiting season opens
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS registration opens in March with an April 1 start date. Have transcripts evaluated for U.S. equivalency and reference letters from prior employers ready before an offer is extended to avoid delays.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Mechanical Engineer roles at Microsoft
Visa-sponsored roles fill quickly and are not always surfaced through general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified Mechanical Engineer openings at Microsoft filtered by sponsorship type before applying through Microsoft's careers portal.
Confirm LCA posting requirements with your hiring team
Before your H-1B petition is filed, DOL requires Microsoft to post a Labor Condition Application notice at your primary worksite for ten consecutive business days. Confirm the office location on your offer letter matches the LCA filing address.

Find Mechanical Engineer at Microsoft JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers. Because the H-1B is subject to an annual lottery, sponsorship is not guaranteed even with an offer in hand. Microsoft also sponsors E-3 visas for Australian citizens and H-1B1 visas for Singaporean and Chilean nationals, both of which bypass the lottery entirely.
Which visa types does Microsoft commonly use for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Microsoft uses H-1B, E-3, and H-1B1 for initial work authorization and sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visas for Mechanical Engineers pursuing permanent residence. The visa type that applies to you depends on your nationality and career stage. Engineers on F-1 OPT can also begin work before a petition is filed.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at Microsoft?
Applications go through Microsoft's careers portal at microsoft.com/en-us/careers. Search by job function or product team and filter by location. Many Mechanical Engineer roles are based in Redmond, WA or research campuses. Migrate Mate lists Microsoft's sponsored Mechanical Engineer openings in one place, so you can confirm sponsorship eligibility before applying directly on Microsoft's site.
What qualifications does Microsoft expect for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Most Mechanical Engineer roles at Microsoft require a bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. Roles on hardware teams like Surface or HoloLens typically expect hands-on experience with SolidWorks or CREO, thermal analysis, and DFM principles. Senior roles often require prior experience shipping consumer or enterprise hardware products from concept through production.
How do I plan my timeline if Microsoft is sponsoring my H-1B?
H-1B employment start dates cannot be earlier than October 1 of the fiscal year the petition covers. If you receive an offer before March, your employer registers you in the USCIS lottery in March, with results typically in April. Plan for a gap of several months between your offer and your legal start date, particularly if you are changing from another status.
