ABOUT THE ROLE
WVUHS Medical Group seeks a Medical Director of Imaging, Community Division to join our growing team. The successful candidate will practice in Morgantown, WV.
The Medical Director of Imaging, Community Division provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for radiology services across all system hospitals, ambulatory centers, and free-standing emergency departments. Reporting directly to the SMG President, this leader works in an administrative capacity to maximize local market share, improve regional efficiency, and ensure clinical excellence. The remaining 50% of the role is dedicated to clinical practice. A primary focus of this hybrid role is successfully navigating a complex physician landscape—directly leading system-employed radiologists and managing relationships with multiple independent contracted radiology groups—while serving as the clinical backstop for emergency coverage gaps.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice, Emergency Coverage, & Service Continuity
- Maintain active clinical practice, delivering high-quality diagnostic interpretations within the system-owned group's standard clinical workflow.
- Serve as the clinical backstop, rapidly stepping into the reading rotation to cover unexpected physician callouts, sudden volume surges, or critical staffing shortages.
- Coordinate emergency triage schedules across both system-employed and independent contracted groups to ensure zero disruption to emergency department or inpatient imaging services.
Physician Management & Hybrid Model Alignment
- Direct system-owned radiologists by managing their performance, clinical productivity, scheduling, and adherence to health system metrics.
- Manage independent physician contracts, serving as the primary administrator holding external private practice radiology groups accountable to established Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Bridge operational gaps between the system-owned group and independent groups to ensure seamless, 24/7 diagnostic and subspecialty coverage across all divisional sites.
- Standardize clinical peer-review and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) frameworks across both system-employed and independent contracted physicians.
Executive Leadership & Regional Growth
- Advocate for division resources directly to the SMG President, presenting data-backed business cases for regional capital equipment and staffing infrastructure.
- Monitor turnaround metrics for regional diagnostic reports, holding both employed and contracted reading providers strictly accountable to the division’s operational standards.
- Cultivate physician networks by building strong relationships with local primary care and specialty doctors to ensure their imaging needs are met.
- Enforce system clinical standards locally, ensuring that community patients receive the same quality of diagnostic care regardless of which physician group reads the scan.
Required Core Competencies
- High-Acuity Adaptability: Ability to balance administrative responsibilities with the clinical flexibility needed to step into frontline reading shifts on short notice.
- Contractual & Political Savvy: Highly developed ability to manage independent, commercially driven private practice groups while upholding health system objectives.
- Executive Presence: Ability to effectively communicate operational data, financial metrics, and clinical outcomes directly to the SMG President and C-suite.
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidate must have a MD or DO degree or foreign equivalent and be eligible for state medical license in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Successful candidate must have completed a Radiology Residency program and be board certified/eligible in Radiology. All qualifications must be met by the time of appointment. Previous leadership experience is a plus.
