Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship in Cleaning
Document your cleaning credentials before applying
Gather vocational certificates, employer reference letters, and training records that prove specialized cleaning experience. Designated sponsors issuing your DS-2019 require documented competency in the field, not just general work history.
Target host employers in hospitality and facilities management
Hotels, commercial cleaning contractors, and healthcare facility services companies regularly host J-1 Trainees because their structured workflows satisfy the training-plan requirements. Focus your outreach on operations with formal onboarding programs.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-aligned cleaning roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. cleaning and facilities positions by employers familiar with exchange visitor hiring. Targeting hosts with prior J-1 experience reduces the time needed to secure a training plan agreement.
Verify your program category matches your education level
Current vocational students typically enter under the Intern category, while graduates with at least one year of field experience qualify as Trainees. Mismatching the category delays DS-2019 issuance, so confirm eligibility with your designated sponsor before approaching hosts.
Ask host employers to sign a detailed training plan early
The Form DS-7002 Training Plan must describe specific cleaning competencies, supervision methods, and weekly schedules. Sponsors review this document before issuing the DS-2019, so locking in employer agreement on its contents before the offer stage prevents last-minute renegotiation.
Confirm the host is enrolled in E-Verify before accepting an offer
Certain J-1 host employers are required to participate in E-Verify to confirm work authorization. Check this during the offer stage, not after signing, because a host without E-Verify enrollment can stall your start date.

Find Cleaning JobsCleaning J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers cleaning and janitorial roles?
Cleaning positions typically fall under the Trainee category for candidates who have completed vocational or post-secondary education and have at least one year of related work experience outside the United States. Current students enrolled in a hospitality or facilities management program may qualify under the Intern category instead. Your designated sponsor confirms which category applies based on your credentials and the host employer's training plan.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a cleaning position?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or InterExchange, not the cleaning company or hotel that hires you. The host employer provides the job and signs your training plan, but the designated sponsor reviews that plan, issues your DS-2019 form, and monitors your program compliance throughout the exchange.
Does a cleaning J-1 role trigger the two-year home residency requirement?
The two-year home residency requirement (also called the foreign residence requirement) applies when your J-1 program is funded by your home government or the U.S. government, or when your skill is on your home country's skills list. Most privately funded Trainee and Intern placements in cleaning do not trigger it, but you should confirm with your designated sponsor and review your DS-2019 annotation before making any future U.S. visa plans.
How do I find U.S. cleaning employers that accept J-1 exchange visitors?
Migrate Mate lets you search cleaning and facilities roles by employers familiar with J-1 hosting. Prioritize hospitality groups, commercial building services firms, and healthcare facility contractors, since these sectors run structured training programs that satisfy designated sponsor requirements. Avoid applying to small residential cleaning operations, which rarely have the administrative capacity to complete the required training plan documentation.
Can I switch host employers mid-program if the cleaning job doesn't work out?
Switching hosts mid-program is possible but requires your designated sponsor's approval before you stop working at the original site. The new host must agree to a revised DS-7002 Training Plan, and your sponsor must issue an updated DS-2019 reflecting the change. Leaving a host employer without sponsor authorization violates your program terms and can jeopardize your J-1 status, so notify your sponsor first rather than after the fact.
