J-1 Visa Restaurant General Manager Jobs
Restaurant General Manager roles in the United States are accessible to international professionals through the J-1 Trainee or Intern program categories, which require a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019 and oversee your placement. Securing sponsorship depends on matching your hospitality management credentials to a structured training plan with a qualifying host employer.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Restaurant General Manager
Document your hospitality management credentials thoroughly
Gather transcripts, professional certifications, and letters from past employers that confirm hands-on food service or restaurant management experience. Designated sponsors evaluate your credentials against your proposed training objectives before issuing a DS-2019.
Target host employers with formal training infrastructure
Multi-unit restaurant groups and hotel food and beverage divisions are far more likely to have structured J-1 Trainee programs than independent single-location operators. Prioritize employers who already have a training plan template and a designated point of contact for international program compliance.
Search J-1-compatible roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. restaurant management roles by employers with J-1 hosting history. This shortens your search considerably, since most general manager positions are not publicly tagged with visa program details.
Confirm your program category before approaching sponsors
If you are currently enrolled in a hospitality degree program, the Intern category applies. If you have already graduated and have relevant work experience, the Trainee category is the correct fit. Applying under the wrong category delays DS-2019 issuance and can void your placement.
Verify your host employer meets DOL wage requirements
Your J-1 training compensation must meet applicable prevailing wage standards. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the wage level for restaurant general manager roles in your host employer's geographic area before you accept an offer.
Review the home residency requirement before finalizing your plan
Some J-1 participants are subject to a two-year home country residency requirement after their program ends, which affects whether you can immediately pursue an H-1B or green card. USCIS and your designated sponsor can clarify whether your specific situation triggers this condition.

Find Restaurant General Manager JobsRestaurant General Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Restaurant General Manager roles?
The Trainee category applies to candidates who have a degree or professional certificate in hospitality management plus at least one year of related work experience outside the United States, or five or more years of work experience in lieu of a degree. Current hospitality students seeking practical placement may qualify under the Intern category instead. Your designated sponsor makes the final determination based on your credentials and the proposed training objectives.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a restaurant management role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your hiring restaurant. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019, review your training plan, and maintain compliance oversight throughout your program. The restaurant group or hotel food and beverage division acts as the host employer, providing the actual placement and compensation, but it does not hold sponsor status.
How do I find U.S. restaurant employers that have hosted J-1 Trainees before?
Migrate Mate lets you search restaurant and hospitality management roles and identify employers with J-1 hosting experience, which is not information most public job boards surface. Prioritizing employers with a track record means a designated sponsor has already reviewed and approved their training environment, which shortens the DS-2019 issuance process significantly.
What does a J-1 Trainee training plan need to cover for a general manager role?
The training plan, known as the DS-7002, must break your program into distinct phases covering specific competencies such as cost control, labor scheduling, compliance with health codes, and team leadership. Generic descriptions of restaurant duties are routinely rejected. Your designated sponsor works with your host employer to structure the plan so each phase has defined objectives, timelines, and supervision arrangements.
Can the two-year home residency requirement affect my career path after a J-1 placement?
Yes. If your J-1 program is funded by your home country government or if restaurant management in your home country appears on the State Department's Skills List, you may be required to return home for two years before applying for an H-1B, L-1, or immigrant visa. USCIS adjudicates waiver requests in some circumstances, but the process adds time and uncertainty to any post-program immigration plans.
