Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Project Assistant
Align your credentials with training plan requirements
Intern category applicants must be enrolled in or have graduated within 12 months from a degree program. Gather transcripts, your diploma, and a letter from your institution confirming enrollment or recent completion before approaching host employers.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee before applying
If you graduated more than 12 months ago, you'll apply under the Trainee category, which requires at least one year of work experience in your field. Applying under the wrong category delays your DS-2019 issuance and can void an offer.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned Project Assistant roles
Not every employer understands the host-site model or has worked with a designated sponsor before. Use Migrate Mate to filter for U.S. employers actively open to J-1 exchange visitors so you're targeting hosts who already know the process.
Verify the employer's willingness to sign a training plan
Your designated sponsor requires the host employer to co-sign a structured training plan before issuing the DS-2019. Confirm early in your conversations that the employer's HR team is prepared to document your learning objectives by role and week.
Check whether your category triggers the two-year home residency requirement
Project Assistants funded by a government or international organization, or whose home country has a skills-shortage designation, may face a two-year home residency requirement. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Request your DS-2019 start date with buffer time built in
J-1 holders can enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date on the DS-2019. Ask your designated sponsor to set the start date at least two weeks after your expected visa interview so travel delays don't push you outside the entry window.

Find Project Assistant JobsProject Assistant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Project Assistant roles?
It depends on your career stage. If you're currently enrolled in a degree program or graduated within the past 12 months, you'll typically qualify under the Intern category. If you've been out of school longer and have at least one year of relevant work experience, the Trainee category applies. Both categories are appropriate for project coordination and administrative support work in professional settings.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a Project Assistant position?
A U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization sponsors your J-1 visa, not the employer. Organizations like IIE, CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT issue your DS-2019 form and monitor your program compliance. The employer is your host site. You'll coordinate separately with both the host employer and your designated sponsor throughout the application process.
How do I find Project Assistant host employers open to J-1 exchange visitors?
Many employers aren't familiar with the host-site model or don't advertise J-1 openings explicitly. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for U.S. employers and roles that align with J-1 sponsorship, so you're not cold-approaching companies that have never worked with a designated sponsor before. Targeting informed employers shortens your path to an offer and a completed training plan.
What documents do I need before a host employer can issue my DS-2019?
Your designated sponsor will require a completed training plan signed by the host employer, proof of your English proficiency, evidence of your academic enrollment or degree completion, and documentation showing the host can fund the placement. Intern applicants should also have a letter from their academic institution. Assembling these before contacting employers speeds up sponsor review once an offer is in place.
Can a Project Assistant on J-1 status extend their program or change host employers?
Extensions are possible with your designated sponsor's approval, up to the maximum allowed under your category. Intern programs can run up to 12 months total, while Trainee programs can extend up to 18 months in most fields. Changing host employers mid-program requires your sponsor to issue an amended DS-2019. Not all sponsors allow mid-program host changes, so confirm this policy before accepting your initial placement.
