General Function:
Under supervision performs semiskilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of District buses and vehicles. This may include washing school buses, washing and helping service all other school vehicles, fixing flats when appropriate, replacing worn out tires when appropriate, doing lube jobs and oil changes, etc. Develop and implement a preventative maintenance schedule for buses and vehicles. Assist at bus inspection in minor repairs. Driving a school bus or going as an assistant when necessary/assigned.
Education and Training Experience
Minimum:
High school graduate or equivalent education, training and experience. Must be twenty-one years of age. Must possess or be able to obtain (within 12 months of employment) and maintain a Class B CDL license (with a "P" and "S" endorsements) and adhere to requirements for School Bus Drivers as outlined in #6.41.4 NMAC. Must be able to obtain NMPED Certification as a School Bus Driver Instructor.
Preferred given for:
Previous experience working with vehicles, especially school buses and/or large automotive equipment. Diesel Tech ASE Certification given preference.
Knowledge/ Skills and Abilities:
Must have the ability to follow instructions. Requires a knowledge of lubricants, lubricating devices, tools and materials used in the servicing, maintenance and repair of buses and other automotive equipment. Must be able to operate a steam cleaning machine. Must be able to operate or learn to operate a tire and balancing machine. Must be able to identify common automotive parts, materials, tools and supplies and effectively use standard hand tools and equipment commonly utilized in the maintenance, repair and servicing of buses and automotive equipment. Must be able to work with vendors in ordering and obtaining parts, scheduling major repairs, and anything related to same. Must be willing to attend all in-service trainings and department meetings.
Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to):
Shop manuals and equipment, Gasoline, solvents, paint thinners, hoses, air equipment, tools and soap solutions. Desktop/laptop computer.
Physical/Cognitive Requirements:
Visual acuity is required in order to read manuals, instructions, and data output from diagnostic machinery. Also, in order to inspect, monitor and check out vehicles for safety and reliability. The minimum amount of weight to be lifted is 70lbs, although may be routinely required to lift up to 100-150 lbs.
Environmental Conditions:
Most of the work is performed in an indoor shop setting, however, may also work outdoors when assisting in the repairing of disabled vehicles or when washing vehicles. Routine exposure to gasoline, diesel and paint fumes.
Essential Job Functions
All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following:
- Inspect buses and district vehicles to ensure against mechanical defects, malfunctions and potential safety hazards per a preventative maintenance school.
- Lubricate buses, automotive and other power equipment, replace defective lubrication fittings.
- Inspect batteries for water level and corrosion.
- Repair and change tires, and maintain the proper inflation level of tires.
- Perform oil changes and lube school buses and district vehicles based on a preventative maintenance schedule.
- Replace light bulbs, lenses, fuses and other parts as needed. Wash spare buses. Assist route and activity driver's in setting up power washer and materials.
- Adjust and repair windows, seats and mirrors.
- Perform minor engine repair functions as appropriate.
- Schedule and facilitate major repairs with the appropriate vendor.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of vehicle braking, steering, and electrical operating systems.
- Maintain a record of the service and preventative maintenance tasks accomplished.
- Occasionally performs service as a substitute school bus driver and/or assistant.
- Obtain price quotes, order and obtain parts from vendors.
- Maintain a parts and tools inventory.
- Set up invoices and submit to business office for payment to vendors.
- Assist in collecting fuel receipts, setting up Wright Express Fuel Invoice, and submit to the business office for payment.
- Assist in scheduling activity/athletic trips and drivers.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Protects the District's resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
- Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
