Which companies sponsor visas for machine learning roles in Iowa?
Principal Financial Group, John Deere, and Collins Aerospace are among the larger Iowa employers that have sponsored work visas for technical roles including machine learning. The University of Iowa and Iowa State University also hire ML researchers and engineers with sponsorship. Smaller Iowa-based insurtech and agtech firms increasingly hire ML talent but sponsor less consistently than larger corporations.
Which visa types are most common for machine learning roles in Iowa?
The H-1B is the most common visa for machine learning roles in Iowa, as ML engineer and data scientist positions typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science or statistics. Candidates already holding OPT or STEM OPT authorization can work immediately while their employer files an H-1B petition. The O-1A is an option for candidates with exceptional research credentials.
Which cities in Iowa have the most machine learning sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines is Iowa's primary hub for machine learning sponsorship jobs, driven by its concentration of financial services, insurance, and agtech companies. Iowa City benefits from the University of Iowa's research activity, and Ames sees demand tied to Iowa State University and agricultural technology firms. Smaller cities like Cedar Rapids have some ML hiring within manufacturing and logistics companies.
How to find machine learning visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and filters machine learning roles by state, so you can browse Iowa-specific openings from employers who have sponsored visas before. Because Iowa's ML market is smaller than coastal tech hubs, filtering by sponsorship history is especially useful for avoiding roles where sponsorship is unlikely. Setting up alerts on Migrate Mate for Iowa machine learning positions helps you respond quickly when new roles appear.
What should machine learning candidates know about Iowa's hiring market and visa considerations?
Iowa's machine learning market leans heavily toward applied ML in agriculture, insurance, and manufacturing rather than pure research. Employers here tend to prefer candidates who can connect ML models directly to business outcomes. Because the state has fewer large tech employers than coastal markets, H-1B cap-exempt positions at universities such as Iowa State and the University of Iowa can be a meaningful alternative for research-oriented candidates, since those roles are not subject to the annual H-1B lottery.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored machine learning jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
