Which companies in Iowa sponsor visas for principal software engineers?
Principal Financial Group, Workiva, Collins Aerospace, and Corteva Agriscience are among the Iowa employers that have sponsored work visas for senior engineering roles. Financial services and insurance technology firms in Des Moines represent the densest concentration of sponsoring employers, while Cedar Rapids-based aerospace and manufacturing companies also hire at the principal engineer level with visa support.
Which visa types are most common for principal software engineer roles in Iowa?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for principal software engineers in Iowa, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Candidates with extraordinary ability may pursue the O-1A. Some multinational engineers transfer via L-1A or L-1B visas. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa for computer-related occupations.
Which Iowa cities have the most principal software engineer visa sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines leads by volume, driven by its concentration of financial services, insurance technology, and enterprise software firms. Cedar Rapids follows, with sponsoring employers in aerospace, manufacturing technology, and agribusiness. Iowa City and Coralville also produce sponsorship opportunities through the University of Iowa's affiliated research and health technology organizations, as well as the broader tech ecosystem that has developed around the university.
How to find principal software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it easier to identify principal software engineer openings in Iowa without sorting through roles that don't offer sponsorship. You can search by state and seniority level to surface relevant positions at employers like Workiva, Principal Financial Group, and Collins Aerospace. Setting up alerts for Iowa-based principal engineer roles helps you respond quickly when new sponsoring positions open.
Are there any Iowa-specific considerations for principal software engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Iowa's H-1B prevailing wage requirements are set at the county level by the Department of Labor, and Des Moines-area rates differ from rural Iowa counties. Principal-level engineers typically fall into Wage Level III or IV, reflecting senior experience and leadership responsibilities. Iowa's relatively lower cost of living compared to coastal markets can make compensation packages competitive in real terms. The University of Iowa and Iowa State University also produce graduate pipelines that some employers draw from when hiring sponsored engineers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored principal software engineer jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
