Which companies sponsor visas for principal software engineers in Michigan?
Michigan's largest visa sponsors at the principal engineer level include Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Stellantis, and their technology subsidiaries, which file significant H-1B volumes annually. Beyond automotive, companies like Rocket Companies in Detroit, Consumers Energy, and various Ann Arbor-based software firms also appear in Department of Labor disclosure data as active sponsors for senior engineering roles.
Which visa types are most common for principal software engineer roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most commonly used visa for principal software engineers in Michigan, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a related bachelor's degree or higher. Candidates with exceptional records of recognition, publications, or industry leadership sometimes pursue the O-1A. Those already holding an approved I-140 may also transfer into Michigan roles while maintaining priority dates.
Which cities in Michigan have the most principal software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding metro area, including Dearborn and Auburn Hills, concentrates the largest share of principal software engineer sponsorship activity due to the automotive OEM and supplier headquarters based there. Ann Arbor is the second-largest hub, anchored by University of Michigan spinouts, health technology companies, and enterprise software firms with active international hiring programs.
How to find principal software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify principal software engineer roles in Michigan without sorting through positions that exclude international candidates. Because employers at this level often don't advertise sponsorship explicitly in job postings, using a platform like Migrate Mate that surfaces confirmed sponsoring employers saves significant time in the search process.
Are there state-specific considerations for principal software engineers seeking sponsorship in Michigan?
Michigan's Department of Labor prevailing wage determinations for principal software engineer roles reflect the Detroit metro and Ann Arbor markets separately, and employers must file Labor Condition Applications matching the specific worksite location. Michigan's concentration of automotive tech work also means some roles involve export-controlled technology, which can add a separate compliance review step affecting international candidates regardless of visa category.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored principal software engineer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
