Which companies sponsor visas for principal software engineers in Pennsylvania?
Comcast in Philadelphia is one of the most active sponsors for senior engineering roles in the state, alongside SAP America, which has a major presence in Newtown Square. Healthcare technology employers like Independence Blue Cross and pharmaceutical-adjacent tech firms in the Philadelphia suburbs also sponsor at the principal level. Pittsburgh's growing tech presence includes Google, Bosch, and various AI-focused startups that have filed H-1B petitions for senior engineers.
Which visa types are most common for principal software engineer roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for principal software engineers in Pennsylvania, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field. Candidates with extraordinary ability may pursue the O-1A. Intracompany transferees joining Pennsylvania offices of multinational firms like SAP may use the L-1A or L-1B, depending on their role and tenure.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most principal software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia generates the highest volume of principal software engineer sponsorship opportunities in Pennsylvania, driven by Comcast's technology division, financial services firms, and a large healthcare IT sector. Pittsburgh is the second major hub, supported by Carnegie Mellon University's talent pipeline, Google's Pittsburgh engineering office, and a growing autonomous vehicle and AI research cluster. Smaller concentrations exist in Newtown Square and Malvern, home to enterprise software companies.
How to find principal software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters principal software engineer roles in Pennsylvania by visa sponsorship history, making it straightforward to identify which employers are actively sponsoring. Because many companies list senior engineering roles without explicitly stating sponsorship availability, using a platform like Migrate Mate that cross-references employer sponsorship patterns saves significant time compared to manually vetting each posting.
What should principal software engineers know about visa sponsorship considerations specific to Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania's principal software engineer roles are concentrated in regulated industries like healthcare, financial services, and telecommunications, which can add internal compliance steps to a sponsorship process even after an employer agrees to sponsor. Pittsburgh's university-affiliated employers, including Carnegie Mellon and UPMC, are cap-exempt H-1B filers, meaning they can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery window, which is a meaningful advantage for candidates currently on OPT or another time-sensitive status.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored principal software engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
