Which companies sponsor visas for principal software engineers in Wisconsin?
Epic Systems in Verona is one of the most active sponsors for senior engineering roles in the state, given its scale in healthcare software. Other notable employers include Northwestern Mutual, American Family Insurance, Harley-Davidson, and Exact Sciences in Madison. Larger Wisconsin-based enterprises with dedicated engineering organizations are generally more likely to have established sponsorship processes for principal-level hires.
Which visa types are most common for principal software engineer roles in Wisconsin?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for principal software engineers in Wisconsin, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Candidates with extraordinary ability may also pursue the O-1A. Employers filing Labor Condition Applications with the Department of Labor must attest to paying the prevailing wage for the specific Wisconsin location where the work is performed.
Which cities in Wisconsin have the most principal software engineer sponsorship jobs?
Madison and Milwaukee account for the large majority of principal software engineer sponsorship activity in Wisconsin. Madison is anchored by Epic Systems and a cluster of healthcare technology companies near the University of Wisconsin campus. Milwaukee draws demand from financial services firms, insurance companies, and manufacturing technology operations. Verona, effectively part of the greater Madison metro, is worth including in any search given Epic's headquarters there.
How to find principal software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search principal software engineer roles in Wisconsin without sorting through positions that don't sponsor. The platform surfaces openings at Wisconsin employers who have a documented history of sponsoring senior engineering talent, which is particularly useful given that sponsorship at the principal level is less common than at mid-level engineer roles.
Are there state-specific considerations for principal software engineers seeking sponsorship in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin does not have a state-level visa program, so sponsorship follows standard federal H-1B rules. One practical consideration is that the prevailing wage for principal software engineers varies by metropolitan area: Madison and Milwaukee wage tiers differ from rural Wisconsin locations, and employers must comply with the DOL-determined prevailing wage for the specific worksite. The University of Wisconsin system also produces a pipeline of engineering talent that influences how local employers approach senior hiring and sponsorship.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored principal software engineer jobs in Wisconsin?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
