How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Architecture
Build expertise in computational design tools
Proficiency in Grasshopper, Dynamo, Rhino scripting, and parametric modeling makes you harder to replace, which strengthens the business case for sponsorship. Computational design specialists are in short supply domestically. This skillset also opens doors at firms like Zaha Hadid Architects and BIG that rely heavily on parametric workflows.
Pursue LEED or WELL credentials alongside your architecture degree
Sustainability certifications like LEED AP or WELL AP add specialized value that differentiates you from domestic candidates. Many firms are expanding their sustainable design practices and need credentialed professionals to lead those efforts. These credentials can be earned while on OPT and strengthen your H-1B petition narrative.
Apply to firms during competition season
Architecture firms ramp up hiring after winning major design competitions and project bids, typically announced in cycles. Follow industry publications like Architect Magazine and Dezeen for award announcements. Reaching out to firms shortly after a big win - when they need to staff up quickly - can improve your chances of sponsorship consideration.
Consider architecture roles at non-traditional employers
Tech companies like Apple, Google, and Meta have in-house architecture teams for campus design and workplace strategy. These employers often have robust immigration programs already in place for engineering hires, making the addition of an architecture sponsorship straightforward. Healthcare systems and university facilities departments also hire architects directly.
Use your STEM OPT period to build a U.S. project portfolio
Architecture qualifies for STEM OPT, giving you up to 36 months of work authorization after graduation. Use this time to complete significant U.S. projects that demonstrate your value to the firm. A strong project portfolio with measurable contributions - like completed buildings or permit sets - makes the strongest case when it is time to request H-1B sponsorship.

What types of architecture roles are most likely to offer visa sponsorship?
Design-focused positions at large firms - including project architects, design architects, and technical architects - tend to have the strongest sponsorship track records. Specialized roles in healthcare facility design, sustainable design (LEED-focused), and computational design are particularly in demand. Firms with international clients often need architects who understand global building standards, which works in favor of international candidates.
Do I need a NAAB-accredited degree to work in architecture in the U.S.?
A NAAB-accredited degree is required for licensure in most states, but you can work in architecture roles without one while pursuing licensure. If your degree is from a foreign institution, NCARB's Education Evaluation Services for Architects can assess equivalency. Some states accept foreign credentials combined with additional experience in lieu of a NAAB degree.
Can landscape architects get visa sponsorship?
Yes. Landscape architecture (SOC 17-1012) qualifies as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes since it requires a bachelor's degree or higher. Firms like AECOM, SWA Group, and Sasaki have sponsored landscape architects. CLARB (Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards) certification can further strengthen the petition.
How does firm size affect sponsorship likelihood in architecture?
Larger firms with 100 or more employees - such as Gensler, HDR, and Stantec - are more likely to have immigration counsel on retainer and a streamlined sponsorship process. Smaller boutique studios may sponsor for exceptional candidates but often lack experience navigating the process. Mid-size firms with international projects can be a strong middle ground.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Architecture jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a architecture in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
