How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Interior Designer
Focus on hospitality design for the strongest sponsorship path
Hospitality design firms regularly work with international clients on hotel, resort, and restaurant projects worldwide. This global scope creates a natural business case for hiring international designers who understand diverse cultural aesthetics. Firms like HBA and Rockwell Group are known for building internationally diverse teams.
Master Revit and BIM for interior applications
Proficiency in Revit, BIM 360, and SketchUp Pro is increasingly expected for interior design roles at larger firms. Being able to produce construction documents and coordinate with architects in BIM workflows makes you operationally essential. This technical capability strengthens the argument that you bring specialized skills to the team.
Earn NCIDQ certification as early as possible
NCIDQ certification is the gold standard for interior design professionals in North America and serves as evidence of specialized expertise in visa petitions. You can begin sitting for sections of the exam after accumulating the required education and experience hours. Starting the process on OPT means it may be complete by the time your employer files for H-1B.
Build expertise in healthcare or workplace design
Healthcare interior design requires knowledge of infection control standards, ADA compliance, and evidence-based design - skills that are in short supply. Similarly, workplace strategy and office design have surged in demand as companies redesign post-pandemic spaces. Either specialization makes you harder to replace and strengthens the sponsorship rationale.
Join ASID or IIDA for networking and job visibility
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and International Interior Design Association (IIDA) host events, design competitions, and job boards used by firms that hire internationally. Active membership demonstrates professional commitment and connects you with firms that value credentialed designers. Winning or being shortlisted in their design competitions also strengthens an O-1 visa case.

Can interior designers qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Interior design can qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes, but the petition is stronger when the role explicitly requires a bachelor's degree in interior design or a related field. Positions at large hospitality design firms and corporate design departments tend to have clearer degree requirements. NCIDQ certification further supports the case that the role demands specialized expertise.
What is the NCIDQ certification, and does it help with visa sponsorship?
The NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) exam is the recognized standard for interior design competency in the U.S. and Canada. Passing it demonstrates that you meet professional-level qualifications, which strengthens the specialty occupation argument in an H-1B petition. Over 30 U.S. states and jurisdictions reference NCIDQ certification in their interior design regulations.
Which interior design firms are most likely to sponsor visas?
Large hospitality design firms like HBA (Hirsch Bedner Associates), Wilson Associates, and Rockwell Group have a history of hiring international designers for their global hotel and resort projects. Multi-disciplinary firms like Gensler and Perkins&Will also hire interior designers and have established immigration processes. Firms with international clients tend to value cross-cultural design perspectives.
Do I need a U.S. interior design license to get sponsored?
Licensure requirements vary by state - some states require registration or licensure for practicing interior designers, while others have no requirements. You do not need a license before being sponsored, but having NCIDQ certification or being license-eligible can strengthen your petition. Check the requirements in the state where you plan to work.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Interior Designer jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a interior designer in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
