How to book your B-1/B-2 appointment in Brazil
Brazilian applicants book B-1/B-2 interviews through ais.usvisa-info.com. Before you can book, you need three things:
- Completed DS-160 (the online visa application at ceac.state.gov)
- Paid $185 MRV fee
- Account on ais.usvisa-info.com
All five Brazilian consulates use ais.usvisa-info.com: S茫o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Porto Alegre, and Bras铆lia. Register once and you can book at any of the five posts.
- Apply at the consulate closest to where you live or work. Officers may ask why you chose a different post.
- Many applicants report shorter queues at Bras铆lia and Recife than at S茫o Paulo and Rio. Check all five before committing to a date.
Book the first available slot at any Brazilian consulate. You can move to an earlier date if something opens closer to you.
How to get an earlier appointment or reschedule
Cancellations open up slots at all five Brazilian consulates regularly. These are released back into ais.usvisa-info.com for anyone to claim.
- Check ais.usvisa-info.com every few hours. Slots disappear quickly at S茫o Paulo and Rio.
- New availability often releases late at night or early morning
- If your closest consulate has a longer wait, booking at Bras铆lia or Recife is a common workaround. Just be prepared to explain your choice at the interview.
- For urgent travel (medical emergency, family death, documented business deadline), request an expedited appointment through ais.usvisa-info.com after booking a regular slot
Interview waiver eligibility: what changed in 2025
Since October 1, 2025, only applicants who are at least 18 years old and renewing a B-1/B-2 visa that expired within the past 12 months qualify for an interview waiver. The prior visa must also have been issued for full validity. Previous exemptions for applicants under 14, over 79, and those with long-expired visas no longer apply.
If you qualify, you drop off documents at a collection center with no interview. Everyone else books a standard in-person interview.
2026 travel restrictions
Brazil is not on the Proclamation 10998 list. B-1/B-2 appointments are open for Brazilian citizens. However, if you hold dual nationality that includes a designated country, verify your situation before paying the non-refundable $185 MRV fee.
39 countries are affected: 19 under full suspension (all visa categories), 19 under partial suspension (B-1/B-2, F, M, J, and immigrant visas), and Turkmenistan (immigrant visas only):
- Partial suspension (19 countries): B-1/B-2 suspended. H-1B, L-1, and O-1 work visas still open.
- Full suspension (19 countries): all nonimmigrant and immigrant visa categories suspended.
Verify current country status at the NAFSA proclamation tracker before scheduling. Dual nationals traveling on a passport from a non-designated country are exempt.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check B-1/B-2 appointment availability?
Log into ais.usvisa-info.com and select your preferred Brazilian consulate. The system shows the next available appointment date for that post. You can also check travel.state.gov for an official estimate, updated monthly.
Can I reschedule my B-1/B-2 appointment?
Yes. Brazilian consulates allow two to four reschedules depending on the post. There's no extra fee. Your $185 MRV fee receipt is valid for 365 days. For detailed limits, always reschedule rather than cancel: at some posts, cancelling and rebooking as separate steps counts against your reschedule limit.
What is a dropbox appointment?
A dropbox (interview waiver) appointment lets qualifying renewal applicants submit documents at a collection center without a full interview. Since October 2025, you must be renewing a B-1/B-2 visa that expired within the past 12 months to be eligible.
How do I get a faster B-1/B-2 visa appointment?
Book the first available slot immediately, then monitor ais.usvisa-info.com for cancellations. New slots often appear late at night. If you have an urgent, documented need (medical emergency, family death, or time-sensitive business travel), you can request an expedited appointment through the platform after you have a regular slot booked.
How many times can I reschedule my B-1/B-2 appointment?
Brazilian consulates typically allow two to four reschedules. There's no extra fee. Your $185 MRV fee receipt is valid for 365 days. Always reschedule rather than cancel: at some posts, cancelling and rebooking as separate steps counts against your reschedule limit.
