Job Description
AHRC NYC is seeking an Assistant Principal to join their team at the AHRC Middle/HS.

The Assistant Principal provides administrative and curriculum support to the Principal to ensure that the school provides a safe, productive learning environment of the highest quality and is aligned with NYS Learning Standards and Individual Educational Program mandates. In particular, the Assistant Principal participates in implementing policies, programs, and curriculum activities in a manner that promotes individualized educational development of each student; engages actively in guiding the professional development of teaching staff; and facilitates effective partnering and communication with parents/family members, Department of Education liaisons, and other educational service providers. The Assistant Principal also takes on the operations of the school in the Principal’s absence when necessary.
Salary range: $95,000-$100,000 Annual
Essential Responsibilities
- Works collaboratively with Principal to develop and implement curricula that fully meets NYS Learning Standards.
- Assists with evaluating and selecting curriculum materials and equipment, as well as meeting regularly with Principal to assess implementation and innovation of teaching methods.
- Actively monitors delivery of all educational and related services as prescribed in each student’s Individualized Education Plan.
- Participates in overseeing scheduling of related therapeutic services and in reviewing service-related notes for quality, accuracy, and timeliness.
- Provides coverage of classrooms when certified staff members are not present, as necessary.
- Participates in mentoring/coaching of teaching staff.
- Conducts classroom observations and provides appropriate coaching feedback to teaching staff based on these observations, as applicable.
- Assists with coordinating on-site orientation for substitutes, student interns and volunteers and facilitates appropriate assignments of these staff on ongoing basis.
- Coordinates in-service programs to ensure appropriate expertise in meeting student needs and contributes technical assistance to teaching staff in implementing curriculum material and equipment.
- Contributes to drafting of performance evaluations in accordance with agency and Department of Education requirements.
- Participates in managing communications with parents/family members, as needed.
- Assists with interactions with school district administrators, community groups, special education-related committees, Office of Pupil Transportation, and others to support and facilitate quality service provision in the school.
- Participates in CPSE/CSE/IFSP meetings, as well as interdisciplinary treatment meetings.
- Ensures that school attendance records/staff attendance records are accurately maintained.
- Helps with coordinating oversight of safety and building maintenance operations of school.
Qualifications
- Masters in Special Education, Permanent NYS Certification in Special Education, and Certification as a School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS) required.
- Programmatic experience in special education school settings and knowledge of state and local regulations required.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with students, family members, school district administrators and other external professional staff and demonstration of strong writing skills.
- Must have solid organizational and multi-tasking skills and proven ability to handle sensitive and/or stressful situations.
- Experience with children with autism highly preferred.
