Job Description
This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for overseeing all finance, accounting, and human resources functions within a manufacturing environment. The Director of Finance will lead financial planning, forecasting, and long-range strategic initiatives, including ownership of the annual Business Plan and Strategic Plan, ensuring alignment with operational and production goals.
This role is deeply integrated with plant operations and is responsible for driving financial performance through strong cost control, inventory management, and operational efficiency. The Director will oversee all core financial activities, including cash management, accounts payable and receivable, financial reporting, internal controls, and inventory accounting.
A key focus of this position is cost accounting and manufacturing finance, including standard cost development, labor and overhead rate calculations, variance analysis, and cost improvement initiatives. The Director will ensure balance sheet integrity, oversee payroll and benefits-related accounting (including health insurance IBNR), and ensure compliance with all tax and regulatory requirements.
This role leads the year-end audit process and partner closely with internal and external auditors. The Director of Finance will collaborate cross-functionally with operations, supply chain, quality engineering, and leadership to drive data-driven decision-making, improve plant performance, and achieve both short-term financial targets and long-term strategic objectives.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting in a manufacturing setting
- Direct the annual budgeting and long-range planning process, aligning financial goals with production and operational plans
- Own the Short-Term Forecast (STF) process, including consolidation, analysis, and reporting to corporate leadership
- Partner with plant leadership to monitor and improve key operational metrics, including labor efficiency, scrap, and throughput
- Lead cost accounting functions, including standard cost development for raw materials, labor, and overhead
- Analyze manufacturing variances (material, labor, overhead, scrap) and drive corrective actions
- Maintain and ensure accuracy of inventory valuation, including cycle counts and annual physical inventory
- Oversee full balance sheet management, including reconciliations and inventory-related accounts
- Manage SAP systems related to manufacturing finance, including standard costing and CAPEX tracking
- Track and analyze purchase price variance (PPV) and collaborate with procurement on cost reduction initiatives
- Coordinate and lead external financial audits, including inventory and cost accounting focus areas
- Prepare and present monthly financial and operational variance analysis to leadership
- Manage banking relationships and ensure compliance with debt and lender agreements
- Oversee indirect budgets and partner with department leaders to control costs
- Perform absorption and indirect rate analysis, assessing impact on product costing and profitability
- Develop and maintain workforce planning models aligned with production demand and capacity
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance financial visibility, operational efficiency, and cost control
- Lead cross-functional initiatives to reduce costs, improve margins, and optimize working capital
- Oversee employee benefits administration and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field
- CPA or CMA certification required
- 5+ years of progressive finance leadership experience in a manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated success managing P&L for a small to mid-size (SME) manufacturing operation
- Strong background in cost accounting, inventory management, and standard costing systems
- Experience working in a plant-based or multi-site manufacturing environment
- Experience with international financial reporting (preferably European frameworks)
- Proven ability to lead and develop finance, accounting, and HR teams
- Minimum 5 years of SAP experience, preferably in a manufacturing module
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Office Suite
Additional Requirements
- Experience with U.S. Government and Department of Defense contracts, including DFAR/FAR compliance (preferred in regulated manufacturing environments)
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, supply chain, and production planning
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate financial data into actionable operational insights
