Summary: The Senior Manager, Master Data Management is a hands-on practitioner responsible for the design, implementation, and daily operation of Blood Cancer United’s master data program. Reporting to the Director, Data Governance, this role owns the end-to-end lifecycle of Blood Cancer United’s critical data domains—including member organizations, contacts, patient populations, programs, and partners—ensuring that a single, trusted version of each record is available across all systems.
This is a practitioner role. The Senior Manager will get into the data: building matching rules, resolving duplicates, designing reference data structures, and partnering directly with system owners and data stewards to make master data reliable, consistent, and actionable. The ideal candidate brings deep MDM expertise—including hands-on experience with enterprise MDM platforms such as Reltio—and a comfort operating in a lean nonprofit environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Master Data Domain Management
- Own the master data lifecycle for Blood Cancer United’s core domains: patients/constituents, member organizations, employees, programs, and partner entities
- Define and maintain golden record standards, including field-level merge and survivorship rules that determine which source system wins when data conflicts arise
- Design and enforce entity matching logic to accurately identify, link, and consolidate duplicate or related records across CRM, and other operational systems
- Build and maintain a master data registry or reference catalog using available tooling (e.g., CRM custom objects, SharePoint, or structured database tables)
- Advise hierarchies, parent-child relationships, and organizational affiliations within and across data domains
- Design and execute recurring data quality assessments across master data domains, measuring accuracy, completeness, uniqueness, consistency, and timeliness
- Assist in deduplication and data cleansing initiatives, including bulk remediation projects and ongoing exception management workflows
- Build automated or semi-automated data quality checks using SQL, Python, Power Query, or native platform tooling
- Triage, prioritize, and resolve master data issues escalated by data stewards, system users, or downstream reporting consumers
- Track and report on data quality metrics, trends, and remediation progress to the Director, Data Governance
- Partner with Systems Development Administrators to ensure master data is correctly propagated across integrated platforms, including CRM, marketing tools, and analytics environments
- Identify and document points of data fragmentation or inconsistency across systems and lead resolution efforts
- Define and maintain cross-system mapping documentation, ensuring that the same entity is consistently identified and represented regardless of source
- Support data migration and system implementation projects by supplying validated, cleansed, and standardized master data
- Develop and apply standardization rules for names, addresses, organization types, and other structured fields to improve matching and reporting consistency
- Serve as the primary liaison and partner to the business in defining and leading match/merge rule development, decisions, and oversight processes—including facilitating all necessary reviews and approvals from senior leadership
- Define data stewardship workflows for master data domains and support the Director, Data Governance in assigning and activating steward responsibilities across Blood Cancer United teams
- Serve as the primary point of escalation and technical guidance for data stewards managing constituent, member, and program data
- Develop and deliver training and job aids that help non-technical stewards follow master data standards and entry practices consistently
- Facilitate recurring steward working sessions focused on data quality reviews, exception resolution, and standards updates
- Create and maintain master data documentation including matching rule specifications, survivorship logic, and domain-level data models
- Document entity resolution decisions, known data exceptions, and business rules in a format accessible to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Maintain data lineage documentation that traces how master records are created, updated, and consumed across Blood Cancer United’s systems
- Contribute to Blood Cancer United’s broader data governance documentation library, ensuring MDM standards align with enterprise data policies
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of progressive experience in master data management, data quality, or enterprise data management
- 2+ years of people management experience, including direct supervision, performance management, and professional development of at least one staff member
- Demonstrated, hands-on experience managing at least two master data domains (e.g., party/contact, organization, product, location, or patient data) in a multi-system environment
- Deep proficiency with entity resolution techniques, including deterministic and probabilistic matching, survivorship rules, and golden record construction
- Strong SQL skills; ability to write queries to profile data, identify duplicates, validate matching logic, and support remediation workflows
- Experience using at least one data integration or ETL tool—open-source or native platform—to move, transform, and reconcile master data across systems
- Familiarity with CRM or ERP platforms and their native data management capabilities (deduplication, data loader, merge rules, custom objects)
- Ability to translate complex MDM concepts into clear documentation and practical guidance for non-technical stakeholders
- Proven ability to manage and deliver MDM initiatives in a resource-constrained environment without dedicated MDM platform software
- Hands-on experience using and administering a dedicated MDM platform; experience with Reltio or a comparable enterprise MDM system (e.g., Informatica MDM, Semarchy, or Stibo STEP) is required
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field; equivalent experience accepted
- Experience with nonprofit CRM platforms such as Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge NXT, or Microsoft Dynamics 365
- Exposure to cloud data platforms (Snowflake, BigQuery, or similar) and their native data quality or cataloging capabilities
- Experience with Python for data profiling, standardization, or matching automation
- Experience in or strong familiarity with the life sciences nonprofit sector, including an understanding of blood cancer or rare disease patient advocacy landscapes, clinical research data structures, or health outcomes data; experience managing constituent, member, or patient data in this context is a strong plus
- This role carries direct supervisory responsibility for one junior-level staff member within the Master Data Management function. The Senior Manager is expected to provide day-to-day task direction, ongoing coaching, and formal performance management for this direct report, while creating an environment that supports skill development and growth in core MDM competencies.
- Assign and oversee the day-to-day work of one junior MDM staff member, ensuring task clarity, quality output, and alignment with MDM program priorities
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide actionable feedback, and complete formal performance evaluations in accordance with Blood Cancer United’s HR processes
- Identify professional development opportunities and support the growth of the direct report’s MDM and data quality skill set over time
- Partner with the Director, Data Governance on staffing needs, onboarding, and team capacity planning as the MDM program matures
