Role Summary
The Route Sales Representative is responsible for servicing assigned routes by delivering and merchandising ice cream products to grocery stores, convenience stores, drug stores, food service accounts, and other customers. This role includes loading delivery trucks, maintaining accurate inventory, and ensuring proper stocking, rotation, and presentation of products at each account. This position offers a base salary plus commission. Typical work hours are early morning through afternoon, five days per week, with Wednesdays and Sundays off. The ideal candidate is dependable, has strong communication and basic math skills, and is comfortable working with frozen products in a fast-paced, route-based environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute daily route activities to service assigned accounts, including ordering, delivery, stocking, and merchandising to company standards.
- Build orders using handheld technology and/or order forms by assessing inventory, shelf conditions, promotions, and upcoming demand to maximize sales and reduce out-of-stocks.
- Deliver products safely and efficiently; load/unload product, verify quantities, obtain required documentation/signatures, and ensure accurate invoice and payment processing as applicable.
- Merchandise products in customer locations: stock shelves, rotate product (FIFO), remove damaged/out-of-date items, set displays, place POS materials (as applicable), and maintain clean, organized backstock.
- Grow route sales through upselling, new item introductions, and promotional execution; identify and pursue new account opportunities within the territory.
- Provide excellent customer service by building relationships with store managers and staff; resolve service issues, complaints, credits, and returns promptly and professionally.
- Maintain accurate daily records including invoices, credits, collections (if applicable), inventory, mileage, and route activity; submit reports and reconcile paperwork per policy.
- Ensure vehicle and equipment readiness: perform pre/post-trip inspections, maintain cleanliness, report defects, and follow all safety, DOT, and company policies.
- Collaborate with Sales, Operations, and Warehouse teams to communicate product needs, service issues, and opportunities; support route coverage as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Route & Time Management: Efficient route planning to minimize drive time and fuel costs, daily schedule prioritization (high-volume stops first, time-sensitive deliveries), and on-time service consistency across multiple customer locations.
- Inventory Organization: Truck stock organization for quick loading/unloading, accurate inventory tracking to prevent shortages or overstock, and product rotation (FIFO) to ensure freshness and reduce waste.
- Administrative Organization: Order documentation accuracy (invoices, returns, credits), cash handling and end-of-day reconciliation (as applicable), and digital order entry using handheld devices or route software.
- Customer Account Management: Tracking account notes (special requests, delivery preferences), scheduling follow-ups for promotions/reorders/service issues, and understanding contract and pricing expectations per account.
- Sales & Performance Organization: Tracking sales goals by stop/day/week and executing merchandising plans (planograms, displays, promotion execution) by route and season.
- Vehicle & Equipment Organization: Completing daily vehicle inspection checklists, coordinating basic equipment upkeep (hand trucks, coolers, scanners), and maintaining a clean, safe, compliant truck organization.
Qualifications
- At least 21 years old.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Safe driving record with no more than two preventable collisions or moving violations in the past three years.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Reliable transportation.
- CDL preferred but not required. If not currently licensed, on-the-job training will be provided to obtain a Class B license with air brake endorsement, which must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Physical Requirements
- Driving: Ability to drive for extended periods and safely operate a company vehicle on public roads in varying weather and traffic conditions.
- Lifting/handling: Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull product and equipment (commonly up to 50 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation) using a hand truck/dolly as needed.
- Mobility: Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb steps, and reach to stock shelves and build displays throughout the workday.
- Repetitive motion: Ability to perform repetitive grasping, scanning, and stocking motions and use handheld devices.
- Communication/vision: Ability to communicate effectively with customers and read/interpret invoices, route documents, and product information.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a combination of delivery vehicles, warehouse, and customer locations (retail stores, restaurants, or similar environments).
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions and varying temperatures when delivering and merchandising products.
- May be exposed to noise, moving equipment, and other typical conditions in warehouses and customer backrooms; required PPE must be worn as designated.
- Schedule may include early mornings, weekends, and holiday coverage based on route requirements.
- Work environment subject to change based on duties performed.
