Staff Attorney – Crime Victim Legal Services:
BronxWorks seeks candidates who is passionate about advocating for the rights of crime victims, survivors of domestic violence, and other survivors of trauma to lead our Crime Victims Legal Services team. This includes providing legal assistance and consultation as well as representing survivors in family court cases, and in applications for legal status under the Violence Against Women Act. The Staff Attorney will possess experience in at least one of those legal issue areas. Responsibilities will include developing legal strategies and setting case priorities; conducting intakes and consultations; and developing training for the ongoing professional development of program staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise program staff and manager the overall program performance to ensure high quality services are provided to clients while working towards meeting contract goals.
- Work collaboratively with the program staff to ensure critical needs of survivors are appropriately addressed by coordinating intake process that will accommodate survivors who approach the program directly or through referrals from partner organizations.
- Carry a caseload for which the attorney provide representation in either administrative processes or litigation.
- Develop trainings for the ongoing professional development of program staff.
- Conduct outreach to underserved and other communities in need.
- Ensure that data reporting requirements are met.'
- Working with a variety of third-party stakeholders, including partner social service agencies.
Required Qualifications
- Admitted to practice law in New York and in good standing.
- Experience working with survivors of trauma, immigrants and/or underserved communities is required.
- Familiarity with legal advocacy and representation in family court in seeking orders of protection.
- Familiarity with legal advocacy and representation on immigration matters related the Violence Against Women Act.
- Excellent oral advocacy, litigation and writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Ability to work collaboratively and across issue area with diverse communities and institutions.
- Fluency in another language commonly spoken in NYC is preferred
SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Strong crisis management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to use a computer for extended periods.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time
- Climb five flights of stairs.
- Bend and retrieve objects and/documents.
- Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
- Walk minimum of 1 mile in various weather conditions, including inclement weather.
