Maintenance Technician – Family Shelter
Division: Health, Housing and Homeless Solutions
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor
Location: Dean Street Family Shelter - 2155 Dean Street Brooklyn , NY 11233
Status/Hours: Full-time; schedule may include evenings and on-call rotation
Salary Range: $42,000 - $42,000
Program Description
Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) operates family shelters providing safe, supportive, and dignified transitional housing for families with children experiencing homelessness. Our shelter programs are guided by a trauma-informed, strengths-based philosophy and offer a comprehensive continuum of services—including case management, housing placement, recreation, and supportive programming—to help families achieve stability and permanent housing as quickly as possible. All shelter staff are expected to uphold BCS's commitment to equity, cultural humility, and client-centered care.
Position Overview
The Maintenance Technician performs a broad range of skilled maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance tasks to ensure the safe, clean, and functional operation of the family shelter facility. This role requires hands-on technical expertise and a commitment to maintaining a high-quality living environment for families with children.
Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance and Repair
Perform routine and corrective maintenance tasks including plumbing repairs, electrical troubleshooting (within scope), carpentry, painting, drywall patching, and HVAC filter changes.
Respond promptly to work orders submitted by shelter staff and residents; document completion in the work order system.
Conduct preventive maintenance inspections of building systems, equipment, and common areas on a scheduled basis.
Inspect and maintain all fire safety equipment in coordination with building management and the Maintenance Supervisor.
Perform minor appliance repairs and coordinate with vendors for major equipment servicing.
Unit Turnover and Facility Upkeep
Prepare rooms and units for incoming families, including cleaning, painting, repairs, and furniture setup.
Maintain cleanliness and order in maintenance areas, storage rooms, and mechanical spaces.
Monitor and replenish facility supplies such as cleaning materials and maintenance parts within approved inventory levels.
Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed.
Compliance and Safety
Ensure all maintenance activities comply with building codes, DHS facility standards, and BCS policies.
Promptly identify and report fire hazards, pest activity, structural issues, and other safety concerns.
Maintain accurate records of all maintenance work performed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical training in a relevant trade preferred.
Experience: Minimum of two years of building maintenance or facilities experience, preferably in a residential or institutional setting.
Skills: Proficiency in general building trades (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting). Ability to read work orders and maintain accurate documentation. Strong problem-solving skills.
Certifications: Boiler certification (F-60) and/or HVAC certification a plus.
Other: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks. Valid NYS driver's license a plus. Candidates will be subject to a criminal background check in accordance with applicable law, including NYC Fair Chance Act requirements.
