Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for a CTE Teacher Cadet Instructor & Math Teacher at Buchanan High School. This unique role serves as a dynamic, 50/50 hybrid position, blending the preparation of the next generation of educators in our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teacher Cadet program and impactful secondary mathematics instruction. Why choose between career tech and core academics when you can do both? The day will be split between two vital, distinct worlds: three hours of hands-on CTE instruction and two hours of core high school math classes. This schedule allows a teacher to stay deeply connected to their math roots while using their CTE time to break down live instructional methods with future teacher cadets, directly influencing the future of the profession.
General duties and responsibilities:
- Teaches district approved curriculum
- Collaborate with internal and county schools to provide cadet teaching opportunities, guest speakers, and hands-on learning experiences
- Complete annual CIP self-review and required program reporting
- Delivers a modern curriculum aligned to Michigan state-approved standards for CIP Code 13.0000 (Education General - Teacher Cadet) and Michigan Common Core Math Standards.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
- Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interest, and abilities of the students
- Arranges and sets up the classroom. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students
- Applies current research and theory to classroom instruction
- Utilizes a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved
- Demonstrates successful teaching of school students in grades eight through twelve
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and creating a climate respectful of all learners
- Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports. Each teacher shall evaluate the work of each student in their class. This evaluation should be carried out carefully, equitably, and thoroughly. Students who are having problems should be counseled as soon as the problems are evident. In addition, their parents should be notified. It is required that all teachers assign grades to each student each grading period and report these grades in the manner prescribed by the principal. It is also required that special reports be sent home for any student who receives a failing grade
- Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside of the instructional day
- Develop positive relationships with administration, colleagues, parents, students, and a cooperative team player in any group setting
- Enforces all school policies in their classroom and throughout the building
- Helps supervise students in the halls between periods, before and after school
- Carries out the routine management procedures, including taking and reporting attendance each period; signing corridor passes; passing out and collecting forms for the office, as well as other less common tasks
- Attends all general faculty meetings and meetings of their department. Is a member of each department in which they teach a class
- Serves on the curriculum committees and assumes a leadership role in developing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating curriculum in the district
- Serves as a consultant in the selection of instructional materials and equipment; recommends new programs and changes in existing programs
- Requests the equipment, textbooks, etc. necessary to teach assigned classes. Cares for the equipment assigned by requesting necessary maintenance and by carefully supervising student use of the equipment
- Plans budget and needs to program in conjunction with CTE Director
- Maintains inventory of equipment, furniture, and materials
- Works to develop a positive feeling among students and the public toward Buchanan Community Schools
- Keeps update of the latest developments in field, seeking to improve professional performance
- Responsible for professional behavior consistent with the policies, procedures, and guidelines established by the Board of Education
- Ability to plan and implement accommodations for ELL, Special Education, 504, and at-risk students
- Plans and coordinates the procedures of parapros, parents, and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips
- Provides accurate and timely reports as required by administration
- Participate in extracurricular activities that are a part of the total educational experience for all children
- Participate in school committees, events, and programs designed to improve/enhance the overall school/district program
- Impeccable character, sense of humor, and compassion for students, families, and district staff
- Any other duties or responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the administration
- The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the District
Supervisory Responsibilities: supervises students in the classroom, paraprofessional, parent volunteers, and student volunteers.
Qualification Requirements: to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Education and/or Experience: Bachelor or Masters degree, possible ag science background a plus.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate, Mathematics 6-12 (EX). There is no special certification needed for the CTE class, any teacher with a Michigan Teaching Certificate is able to teach the CTE Teacher Cadet Class.
- Language Skills: read and interpret documents such as policies, regulations, and articles; write reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of stakeholders; and listen and respond to inquiries
- Mathematical Skills: calculate figures and amounts; and apply math concepts to practical situations
- Reasoning Skills: solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables; use logic and reasoning to interpret instructions whether written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Other Skills: apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; technologically literate using Chromebook computers and Google applications; knowledge and prior use of State of Michigan Curriculum benchmarks and grade level content expectations; use of MDE curriculum in guiding planning, teaching and learning activities and strategies for all subject areas as well as formative and summative assessments; able to effectively take direction, as well as, work independently and as a member of a team; ability to handle complex and stressful issues or situations with sound judgment, common sense, and a calm demeanor; punctual and rarely absent work habits; ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies
