The Special Educator will support the vision of the Special Education Departmentin providing appropriate educational services to students in the least restrictive environment tostudents who qualify for special education services.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Develops Individual Educational Programs with parents of pupils assigned in conjunctionwith appropriate diagnostic assessment data and the recommendations of theMultidisciplinary Team.2. Implements instructional objectives, interprets pupil program needs, and accommodatesindividual learning styles as specified in Individual Educational Plans.3. Demonstrates competencies in curriculum analysis, as well as selection andimplementation of appropriate instructional methodologies to ensure concentratedemphasis, as intended to remediate diagnosed areas of deficit for students withdisabilities.4.
Demonstrates a willingness to maintain professional standards by remaining informedregarding current special education instructional approaches and technology.5. Demonstrates the ability to maintain sensitivity to variations in student abilities andlearning styles to facilitate mastery of curricula objectives.6. Demonstrates the ability to work with regular education staff to organize the learningenvironment to optimally accommodate the special needs of participating students.7. Demonstrates the ability to work cooperatively and in partnership with the generaleducation staff within the context of an inclusionary educational environment.8.
Demonstrates the ability to schedule IEP reviews as necessary and in accordance withstate regulations. Maintains all necessary paperwork appropriately and in compliancewith regulatory demands.9. Demonstrates the ability to develop a schedule of teaching activities and maintenance ofcurrent records concerning students assigned.10. Demonstrates the ability to maintain all compliance related records as required.11.
Demonstrates the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding pupil status and studentrecords unless disclosure serves professional purposes or is required by law.12. Demonstrates professionalism and the ability to promote positive rapport amongadministrators, teachers, parents and students.13. Demonstrates the ability to maintain a current inventory of instructional materials andresponsibility for their whereabouts during the course of the year.14. Demonstrates knowledge of the Rhode Island Regulations of the Board of Regents forElementary and Secondary Education Governing the Special Education of Children withDisabilities, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of theRehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.15.
Demonstrates a functional knowledge of individual educational tests, their administrationand interpretation, and their use in the evaluation process.16. Demonstrates appropriate participation in the Multidisciplinary Team process.17. Demonstrates a knowledge of behavior intervention techniques and is able to applybehavior modification programs to alleviate and control individual and group behavioralissues.18. Demonstrates the ability to facilitate smooth student transitions between grade levels andbuildings through appropriate planning, discussion, etc., with parents and staff.19.
Demonstrates the ability to assume all other responsibilities as might be assigned by theBuilding Principal/PPS Director.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Certification as a Special Educator.2. Successful teaching experience preferred.3. Conceptual, interpersonal, and social skills necessary for position performance.4.
