The TRiO Student Support Services Advisor provides individual and small-group advising for TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) eligible students in the areas of academic success, co-curricular engagement, and personal development. The Advisor works to build student engagement, persistence, resilience, retention, and graduation outcomes by providing proactive support, connecting students with campus and community resources, and fostering students' ability to become independent and effective consumers of available support services.
The Student Support Advisor serves as a referral source to both internal and external resources while coordinating services for students experiencing academic, personal, physical health, mental health, or psychosocial challenges. The position requires collaboration with faculty, staff, community organizations, and service providers to ensure students receive comprehensive support.
Essential Functions:
- Provide individualized advising through regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings and facilitate small-group advising sessions to assess student progress, identify needs, prepare students to meet with faculty academic advisors, and coordinate referrals to appropriate Carlow academic and student affairs resources.
- Advocate for students as they navigate academic, student life, and healthcare systems by collaborating with relevant internal and external service providers to ensure student needs and accommodations are understood and appropriately implemented.
- Coordinate various components of internal and external support services for students experiencing complex and ongoing academic and/or social challenges.
- Document all information related to identified students requiring ongoing support, intervention, and monitoring.
- Educate and advise students in the development of self-advocacy skills while coordinating resources and support systems that address disruptions related to mental health, physical health, academic performance, and psychosocial adjustment.
- Maintain effective written and verbal communication among students and all constituencies involved in supporting student success. This includes, but is not limited to, on-campus and off-campus professional service providers, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, campus partners, and, when appropriate, family members.
- Develop and implement programming ranging from large-scale awareness initiatives to small-group workshops and individual student meetings.
- Plan and coordinate student events, including marketing, promotion, and budget management.
- Monitor student progress through various phases of engagement, ensuring appropriate follow-up and compliance with recommendations.
- Create reports and analyze data related to student appointments, referrals, engagement, and academic progress.
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with Disability Services, Student Affairs, Financial Aid, Academic Affairs, and other campus partners.
- Assist with preparation of the annual federal assessment report by ensuring student data is accurate, complete, and readily retrievable.
- Strictly adhere to all principles and policies regarding student confidentiality.
- Effectively engage students, faculty, and staff to foster a supportive and positive atmosphere.
- Build and maintain relationships with community organizations to provide outreach events and services to students while developing partnerships that expand support options for Carlow students.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree plus graduate credits or current enrollment in an accredited master's degree program in psychology, public health, social work, counseling, education, or a related field.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in psychology, public health, social work, counseling, education, or a related field.
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in higher education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evening and occasional weekend hours.
- Ability to respond effectively in emergency and crisis situations.
- Familiarity with current trends in higher education and educational technology, with the ability to leverage technology and other resources to effectively meet student needs.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external partners representing diverse perspectives.
- Ability to work collaboratively while consistently maintaining confidentiality, discretion, and professionalism.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with the confidence and comfort to communicate effectively in individual and group settings.
- Ability to establish and maintain safe, respectful, and inclusive environments for individuals and groups.
