General Functions
The Director of Stakeholder Communications in the Department of Marketing & Communications is responsible for leading the development and delivery of communications to CFP Board’s core audiences, including CFP® professionals, candidates for certification, education providers, corporate partners and donors.
This role oversees editorial strategy, content development and delivery across stakeholder channels, ensuring communications are clear, consistent and aligned with CFP Board’s brand and strategic priorities.
The Director partners closely with the Director of Executive Communications to ensure alignment with CEO and Board messaging and to support consistency across high-visibility communications. The position supervises the Senior Communications Manager & Editor and the Communications Specialist/Writer.

Essential Functions
- Lead delivery of stakeholder communications across channels, including email, newsletters, and web
- Set direction for the stakeholder communications editorial calendar, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and key initiatives
- Ensure communications are timely, relevant and effective in supporting stakeholder engagement and understanding
- Partner with the Senior Communications Manager & Editor, who leads day-to-day editorial review and serves as lead writer and editor for key communications, including CFP Board Report and Knowledge for Practice newsletters
- Lead content planning and set direction across stakeholder channels, including assigning and generating articles and other content for CFP Board’s website, newsletters and other platforms
- Oversee the development and production of The Standard magazine (CFP Board’s annual report), leading project management, coordinating timelines, content contributors, cross-departmental inputs, external design consultants and printer/mail house; and working closely with the Director of Executive Communications to ensure alignment with CEO and Board messaging.
- Translate complex organizational initiatives into clear, actionable communications for stakeholder audiences
- Manage and develop communications staff, including writing and editorial roles
- Set priorities and provide direction for editorial work, while delegating day-to-day execution to team leads
- Establish workflows and processes to ensure efficient and high-quality delivery of communications
- Coordinate with internal teams to manage volume, timing and sequencing of communications
- Partner with the web team to maintain and optimize CFP Board’s online content for usability and engagement
- Partner with public relations and social media team to broaden reach of CFP Board’s content
- Lead CFP Board’s organizational awards program, including identification, coordination and submission of awards across departments
- Coordinate on messaging for major organizational initiatives and announcements
- Collaborate on prioritization and sequencing of high-visibility communications
Background/Skills/Abilities Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related major. Advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of communications experience, with demonstrated progression in responsibility, including editorial leadership and corporate/stakeholder communications
- Demonstrated experience leading communications strategy and execution across multiple channels and audiences
- Strong editorial judgment and ability to set and uphold messaging standards, tone and quality across a range of communications
- Experience managing high-volume communications programs, including prioritization, sequencing and alignment with organizational goals
- Proven ability to translate complex organizational initiatives into clear, effective communications for diverse stakeholder audiences
- Experience managing and developing staff, including setting direction, delegating execution and ensuring high-quality output
- Strong organizational and operational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and functions, including working with senior leadership and subject matter experts
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills, including the ability to determine when to escalate or seek alignment on sensitive or high-visibility communications
- Ability to provide creative direction for visual communications and ensure alignment between messaging and design
- Familiarity with digital communications platforms and email marketing tools
- A solid commitment to being part of a culture driving transformational change with strong business acumen.
- Ability to travel as needed

This position works on programs which are part of the 501 (c)(3) and 501 (c)(6).
This position is based in the Washington D.C. office and works a hybrid schedule which could be changed at any time.

CFP Board is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The applicable starting annual base salary is anticipated to be in the range of $140,000.00 to $160,000.00. In addition to base salary, total compensation includes incentive compensation for which employees are eligible based on completion of individual goals.
