GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is a technical position responsible for assisting with the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of 177 waste water lift station equipment. Work is performed under close supervision with a focus on learning safe work practices, developing technical skills, and supporting the overall operation of the City's lift station system. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Utility Maintenance Mechanic & Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following essential functions represent the primary duties of this position, but should not be considered an all-inclusive list of responsibilities. Other duties may be required and assigned as needed.
Technical Duties:
- Assist with routine maintenance and cleaning of lift station pumps, motors, and equipment.
- Perform basic inspections and report abnormal conditions to senior staff.
- Support pump removal/installation and site cleaning using basic hand tools and equipment.
- Learn and follow confined space entry procedures and other safety protocols.
- Maintain work areas, tools, and vehicles in a clean and organized condition.
- Assist in maintaining proper documentation of lift station activities.
Training & Development Duties:
- Participate in on-the-job training to learn about lift station systems, equipment, SCADA monitoring, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations and procedures.
- Learn proper use of heavy equipment and safety gear under supervision.
- Work alongside experienced Lift Station Mechanics to gain troubleshooting and repair skills.
- Prepare for and work toward obtaining a Class C Wastewater Collections Operator Certificate.
- Prepare for and work toward obtaining a Class B with (N) Tanker endorsement.
Administrative Duties:
- Assist with documenting work performed and closing work orders.
- Support inventory management by checking tools and parts in/out
- Participate in after-hours emergency call-outs and provide technical guidance to responding staff.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, practices and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer and water reuse distribution systems.
- Willingness to learn lift station operations and maintenance procedures.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use common hand tools.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
- Commitment to following all safety rules and procedures.
- Ability to work as part of a team and maintain a positive, professional attitude.
- Physical ability to perform strenuous labor in outdoor conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Level I
- High school diploma, or valid equivalent.
- Valid State of Florida Driver's License.
- Must possess a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B or better or must be able to obtain same within 180 days of employment.
Level II
- Two (2) years of experience performing work in water distribution maintenance or installation.
- Level C Waste Water collection certification or Level 3 Water Distribution Operator license or able to and will obtain license within one (1) year from date of hire.
- Valid backflow certification or will obtain within one (1) year from date of hire.
- Valid State of Florida Class B Commercial driver's license (CDL) with tanker vehicle endorsement or able to obtain within 120 days of hire. An out of state class B CDL is acceptable, but selected candidates must obtain and provide a valid State of Florida CDL within thirty (30) days of start date.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience are in a relevant and related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Level I
- One (1) year of experience performing work in utility maintenance or installation.
JOB LOCATION
All City owned buildings, parks, grounds and recreation facilities. Any off-site locations and facilities utilized as part of the City's participation or involvement in an event, activity or job assignment.
ADDITIONAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Physical Requirements: Work requires very frequent standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending/twisting, pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs., lifting up to 100 lbs.
- Environmental Conditions: Exposure to extreme weather/temperatures, strong odors, chemicals, noxious fumes, excessive noise, smoke/dust/pollen, humidity, animals, electrical currents, bright/dim lights, vibrations, machinery, traffic hazards, and confined spaces.
- Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sound, color, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
