Water Mechanic
The incumbent, under the supervision of the Water Maintenance Supervisor and the direction of the Chief Water Mechanic, is responsible for the performance of a variety of bench, and hand tools, field and machine operations, requiring accuracy and precision, in the construction, maintenance and repair of equipment. Preventative as well as reactive maintenance and the fabrication of some parts is also performed. Work is characterized by its assignment of duties requiring the application of more than one maintenance trade.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.
- Adjust, clean and repair all mechanical equipment normally found in water facilities. This includes valves, pumps, drives, gears, belts, screens, air scrubbers, etc.
- Dismantle and inspect machinery and determine appropriate methods for performing maintenance and repair.
- Construct building partitions; replace roofs, doors and windows as necessary.
- Operate acetylene and arc welding equipment, cuts and fits metal, brazes and welds mobile and stationary equipment. Fabricate equipment from raw materials.
- Repair and replace plant plumbing and fixtures as required.
- Paint, clean and maintain water pump stations as required.
- Operate excavation equipment, front end loader, lift truck and man lift, etc.
- Repair chemical and chlorine feed systems.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Remove and repair pumps.
- Repair drives, belts (including conveyor) and other mechanical systems.
- Required to maintain residence within 40 minutes driving time to City Maintenance Center to limit response time for calls to service.
- Participates in classes and/or attend conferences that are deemed necessary by the SCADA and Water Pump Station Maintenance Supervisor and/or Easement, Building & Station Maintenance Program Manager.
- Follows City, Utility Department, and Easement, Building & Station Maintenance Program safety practices and guidelines at all times, including wearing proper personal protective/safety equipment.
- Regular attendance and timeliness are required.
- Working overtime may be required.
- Working holidays, shifts and weekends is required.
- Working standby and being called in to work afterhours or on weekends is required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Mechanic I Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Minimum of one year experience in mechanical, machinist or industrial maintenance OR technical trade experience OR utility experience is required.
- Must be able to obtain city required safety training along with Forklift, Aerial Lift and Rigging Certification within 2 years of employment.
Mechanic II Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Minimum of three years’ experience required in industrial or pump station maintenance
- Must be able to obtain a Class III water distribution license within 3 years employment
- Must be able to obtain a Backflow test and repair license within 2 years employment
- Must be able to obtain city required safety training along with Forklift, Aerial Lift and Rigging certifications within 2 years of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Grade I to Grade IV Water Treatment Operator License.
- Grade I to Grade IV Water Distribution Treatment Operator License.
- Class I to Class IV Wastewater Operator License.

- Ability to read and interpret complex documents such as federal regulations, policy and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write complex reports and correspondence.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required.
- Ability to effectively communicate with industry representatives, employees, federal or state regulators.
- Ability to verbally communicate and provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, area, circumference, volume, and interpret graphs.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to use math to compute needed statistics for compliance determination.
- Ability to understand in written, oral, or diagram form complex variables and analyze them and explain results to others.
- The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment in the department.
- The employee should also have knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Knowledge in the use of computers using Windows based word-processing, spreadsheet, and database application software.
- Must be proficient in the use of various computer systems and software
POSITION DESIGNATIONS
This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely.
This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.
This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a momentary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is at risk of electrical shock, radiation and vibration, and in high precarious places. The incumbent is also exposed to non-weather related wet, humid conditions.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
