General Description
The Department of Public Works is seeking a Superintendent to perform work of considerable difficulty in the operation of the Sanitation Section. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and planning/organization abilities.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m - 3:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Summer schedule is Monday - Friday, 5:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. or 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Additional hours as needed for on-call rotations and to complete core City functions.
Hiring Range: $94,557 - $105,685/Annually dependent upon qualifications

Examples of Duties
- Organizes, coordinates, directs, and maintains all Sanitation Section projects.
- Supervises and directs the work of Sanitation Section personnel. Conducts performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action. Participates in the hiring process and trains staff.
- Organizes and lays out trash, recycling and brush collection routes
- Investigates and responds to complaints involving trash, recycling, and brush collection.
- Along with Fleet Manager, develops specifications for new equipment and makes purchase recommendations.
- Addresses employee workplace grievances and complaints from the public regarding Sanitation Section activity.
- Develops and implements standard operating guidelines and procedures.
- Enforces municipal code related to storage and collection of trash and recycling, and brush; and issues citations as necessary.
- Researches and drafts prepares reports related to proposals and changes in Sanitation Section services.
- Attends public meetings and responds to the media to address public education and outreach of Sanitation Section services.
- Maintains databases for city-issued trash and recycling containers. Prepares reports and maintains records for collection tonnages and trends.
- Maintains tipper cart, tool, and shop supply inventories. Re-orders stock replenishment as necessary.
- Assists Operations Director and DPW Fiscal manager with development of Sanitation Section annual operating budget.
- Participates in DPW Supervisor/Superintendent on-call rotation, and assists with supervision of all DPW core functions as necessary
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of four years experience in public works supervision, maintenance, or related activities.
- Previous supervisory experience required.
- Valid driver's license with CDL endorsement or ability to obtain one within 6 months, and a good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge in the principles, practices, and safety precautions of solid waste collection and disposal.
- Knowledge of and ability to use computers and mainstream professional software such as the complete Microsoft Office Suite; proficiency in keyboarding.
- Considerable skill in organizing and directing employees.
- Ability to schedule work activities and maintain records. Ability to follow oral and written orders. Ability to assess situations and utilize general problem solving skills; develop sound solutions to unusual work situations. Ability to proficiently utilize a computer and the required software. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to work the required hours of the position including responding to emergency call-ins.
May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Lifting and carrying up to 20-50 pounds.
- Frequent standing and sitting.
- Ability to focus for long period of time on projects.
- Ability to reach, stoop and lift.
- Ability to reach and climb aerial ladders, apply leverage from unusual positions.
- Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
