About Us
About the City Planning and Development Department
The City Planning and Development Department is responsible for guiding the city’s physical growth and economic development. The department develops and implements policies, conducts research, and supports long-term planning initiatives to shape the community’s future. It also oversees the development process by reviewing plans, issuing permits, and ensuring compliance with established regulations, helping promote orderly, sustainable, and strategic development across the city.

Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
- Reviews plans, specifications, and calculations for building code compliance.
- Assists with the interpretation and application of adopted codes which include Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fire Protection, and Energy Code.
- Interacts with other divisions, both within and outside the department, in the facilitation of the plans review and permitting processes.
- Responds to code inquiries from Contractors, Designers, Homeowners, and other interested parties on the submittal and design of building plans, pertaining to the adopted codes and ordinances.
- Monitors work scheduling, on-time performance, and accuracy of work assignments.
- Performs computer data entry for plan review projects.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Preference given to civil, mechanical, electrical, architectural engineers and architects
Qualifications
REQUIRES:
- An ABET accredited Bachelor's degree in any professionally recognized architectural/engineering discipline as required by the hiring authority.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen as prescribed by the City.
- Department requires selected candidate to obtain 5 trade plans examiner ICC certifications within 36 months from date of hire.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.
If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
