Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Under the supervision of the Chief Building Inspectors, responsible for inspecting new and existing residential, commercial, multi-family, and other buildings and structures for critical life safety standards.
- With the assistance of the Chief Building Inspectors, uses knowledge from studying and training on Codes and standards to verify conformance with adopted International Codes, construction documents, and the City's Code of Ordinances.
- Responsible for safely driving a City vehicle to all inspection sites as assigned.
- Responsible for effective communication addressing the needs and concerns of contractors, homeowners, developers, designers, and the general public regarding City inspection requirements.
- Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the areas of building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes.
- Responsible for working independently to manage time, plan routes, and execute assigned inspections.
- Responsible for documenting inspection results that are thorough, clear, precise, and accurate into computer database to track and maintain inspection records.
- Demonstrates knowledge of common software applications and inspection database software on a tablet and laptop computer.
- Responsible for responding to phone calls from citizens and building professionals regarding inspections.
- Responsible for investigating and responding to construction complaints from the general public.
- Complies with all written City and department policies and procedures.
- Complies with safety standards, including prompt reporting of incidents.
- Responsible for adhering to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures.
- Participates in special team projects.
- Achieves ICC certification in either residential or commercial building within 6 months of employment.
- Periodically leads department training.
- Works outdoors in inclement weather conditions, including periods of extreme heat and cold.
- Maintains focus while managing a variable and often heavy workload to complete 100% of assigned inspections each day.
- Responsible for determining if construction work may be covered and if construction can move forward.
- Performs related work as required.

- Requires the ability to perform coordinated movements involving placing and turning motions, such as climbing, walking over uneven surfaces, utilizing a screw and nut driver, circuit tester, level, tape measure, water meter key, and operating a vehicle.
