Basic Purpose of the Job:
Under general direction, this position is responsible for logging, processing and securing evidence. Maintains the security and preserves the integrity of evidence and the chain of custody for the Montrose Police Department. Purges property items from storage upon meeting state laws and departmental procedures. Responds to evidence-related questions or problems and trains officers on procedures. Utilizes the CCIC/NCIC system. Provides reports and information to other agencies and the court system.
Essential Functions:

- Review submission records, tags items, updates database, stores and purge evidence.
- Maintain chain of custody of all evidence and found property. Provide for security and ensure safekeeping. Oversee final disposition of property by authority of case officer and/or policy and procedure.
- Mail instructions to owners regarding claiming releasable property. Release evidence to police personnel and citizens.
- Prepare evidence for viewing by attorneys and testify in court.
- Return, dispose of, and destroy appropriate evidence, including transportation of evidence to disposal sites or to CBI.
- Train new officers on proper evidence procedures; research and make recommendations for the processing and disposal of evidence.
- Maintain, prepare and submit records for reports; input data into the computer.
- Respond to crime scenes as requested for the purpose of picking up and securing crime scene evidence, and support investigators and officers.

Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or general education degree; Associates Degree (A. A.) or equivalent from an accredited college preferred.
- Three (3) years experience in similar position with records maintenance and data entry preferred or combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of law enforcement principles and procedures, and safety policies and procedures in accordance with job functions.
- May be called out after hours, on weekends and holidays.
- CCIC/NCIC certification.
- Current Colorado driver's license with acceptable record.
Sedentary to moderate physical work requiring ability to lift up to 30 pounds, carrying, walking and standing, hand/eye coordination for operation of personal computer; vision for reading and preparing written reports and documents; frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather condition and required to walk or drive in inclement conditions. Subject to sitting for long periods of time. Occasional contact with fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is usually moderate. Occasional contact with stressful situations and irate individuals.

Health Savings Account: A savings account that is tax-free and interest-bearing that you can use to pay for qualified medical expenses like doctor visits, prescriptions, and emergency room bills. The City of Montrose provides a employer contribution at the beginning of the year.
Life and AD&D Insurance: City-paid policies provide security for you and your family. Additional voluntary plans are available to supplement City-paid plans for employees and their dependents.
Retirement Plan: A defined contribution investment program for non-sworn employees. The City will match dollar for dollar up to 8% of your gross base wages. Sworn Police Officers are enrolled in a defined benefit investment program through FPPA.
