Job Description
The House Head Carpenter oversees all on-stage operations, scenic movement, rigging and fly systems. The position is responsible for all fly gallery operations, rigging requirements, set assembly and placement and provides leadership and oversight of stage technicians.
About You:We are looking for a backstage pro to join our production team! You have years of hands-on experience with counterweight rigging systems, loading scenery, hanging lights, and read stage plots like it’s your favorite script. You value safety and feel confident directing a crew of stagehands to keep crew calls safe, smooth, and the show moving. You are also reliable and are willing to share your craftsmanship with other venues when needed.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise teams of additional stagehands or work alone and independently make decisions with very little direct guidance
- Complete assignments within the scope of the carpentry department and be expected to complete them with little to no direct guidance
- Utilize available time during any work call to accomplish additional duties as assigned relevant to their area of responsibility as long as client needs are still being met
- Maintain equipment in good working order, which is relevant to the operations of the activities and staff they oversee and report back any issues to their supervisor so they can be dealt with appropriately
- Receive primary consideration for all work calls in the primary venue of responsibility and consideration for work calls in the other performance and operational areas within the MMCPA
- Work all events occurring in AJ Fletcher Theater and may be required to work outside of department and/or specific area of responsibility as needed
Typical Qualifications
Education & Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 3 to 5 years' experience in theatrical lighting, sound, carpentry, rigging and other associated entertainment/theatrical/ presentation operations
OR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Preferred Qualifications:
3 years experience in operating and directing teams in the safe and proper use of counterweight rigging systems, including directing the safe and proper loading and unloading of scenery, lighting gear, and other necessary stage equipment
Ability to read a stage plot
Significant knowledge and experience in theatrical stage carpentry, operations, rigging and counterweight system operation

Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an office or similar indoor environment, outdoor environment, and construction site. Employees may occasionally work in or around street environment (near moving traffic), vehicles, warehouse environment, and shop environment.
Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts. Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate, be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), fumes or airborne particles, loud noises (85+ decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
