Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.Job Description:
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Supervisor – Water Distribution or designee, installs, repairs, maintains, or replaces water mains, valves, fire hydrants, and water services.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Assists in tapping, installing, and tying in new mains and assembling & installing new water services, tiles, and water meters.
2. Assists in placing and joining pipe in trenches/excavations of various depths and sizes.
3. Assists in raising, lowering, and repairing existing meter tiles. Assists in repairing, replacing, or retiring existing services.
4. Assists in stocking crew trucks and preparing work area as needed for the installation of mains, services, valves, and fire hydrants.
5. Cleans up excavated areas, removes debris, spreads black dirt, and sows grass seed. Gathers, cleans, and loads tools.
6. Places caution lights, traffic control, and all required safety equipment necessary for a safe work zone and project site.
7. Assists in repairing damaged water mains and services during working hours and after hours in emergency situations.
8. Utilizes CU Mobile work management system and email.
9. Assists in operating underground piercing tools, small air boring machine, paving breaker, air drill, tamper, hot saw, hand tools, pipe fusion equipment, and other related tools to install, remove, maintain, or replace water distribution facilities (pipe, services, valves, hydrants, etc.). Must protect and clean all project tools and equipment.
10. Attends all training (safety, instructional, etc.) required by CU.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
**In addition to Water System Installer 1st 6 Months, a Water System 2nd 6 months has increased ownership in the tasks and responsibilities listed above.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Water System Installer 1st 6 Months:
High school graduate or equivalent is required. Related technical or trade specific training is preferred. One year of general construction experience is required and additional general construction experience is preferred.
Water System Installer 2nd 6 Months:
In addition to the Water System Installer 1st 6 Months requirements a 2nd 6 Months prefers to have related technical or trade specific training. A minimum of six months' experience in water distribution system construction and maintenance is required. In lieu of actual water construction experience, candidates having a minimum of two years’ experience installing other underground utility systems may be considered.
Licensing/Certification:
Must have a valid Missouri CDL, Class B including air brakes, OR:
A. The ability to obtain a Missouri Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within six weeks of employment.
AND
B. The ability to obtain a CDL, Class B including air brakes within in six months of employment. This requires approximately 15 hours (total) classroom training and completion of behind-the-wheel training (hours to be determined) as required by City Utilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A working knowledge of water pipe-laying procedures, practices, and equipment.
Basic general construction knowledge and ability.
Be dependable and have the ability to follow instructions and learn new work procedures and techniques.
Ability to:
Work safely and implement the proper use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPEs).
Operate all required hand and power tools in a safe manner.
Respond to overtime call-in situations within 1-hour of notification, as required for emergency water distribution maintenance.
Neatly complete required paperwork and documentation on time (daily timesheets, daily assigned job documentation, etc.).
Be courteous when interacting with customers and co-workers.
Be adaptable to work on changing job assignments and a variety of tasks.
Develop a knowledge and understanding of CU’s company/department procedures & policies and safety requirements.
Effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems. Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.
Maintain adherence to all company policies.
Physical Requirements:
Physical requirements include: sitting, standing, grasping, bending, squatting, reaching, balancing, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and climbing. Must be able to lift 60+ lbs regularly, (occasionally up to 90 lbs.) and handle construction tools and other equipment associated with this position. Must be able to work within the rated capacity of the Utility’s aerial lifts, ladders, fall restraint devices, and other job-related equipment.
Working Conditions:
Works primarily outdoors subject to changing weather conditions. May be exposed to high and low temperatures, air contaminants (e.g., dust, fumes, smoke, toxic conditions), vibration (e.g., tractor, jackhammer), dirty environment, awkward or confining spaces, exposure to dangerous conditions (e.g., moving parts, electrical hazards), wet conditions (spraying water, water in ditch, mud) and considerable noise.
Safety Sensitive Position:
A safety-sensitive position involves the performance of duties which may have a direct and immediate impact on the safety of the public and other public employees. This is a safety sensitive position.
Miscellaneous Requirements:
Required to wear uniform clothing provided by City Utilities. Management retains the right to require replacement due to wear and/or staining.
Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
Subject to Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
Shift work and/or overtime is required.
Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
