Night Shift Clinical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/CLS/MLT) Cleveland Area Hospital, Cleveland, Oklahoma

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adhere to all policies of the organization, including (but not limited to) job description, certification/licensure requirements, mission statement, HIPAA, confidentiality standard, and patient’s rights.
- Stay up to date with organization communication and directive.
- Collects, processes, and handles blood and/or other biological specimens according to established policies and procedures, ensuring appropriate sampling and maintaining accurate record keeping; instructs patients in the proper collection of samples.
- Follow the laboratory’s policies and procedures for testing analyses, reporting, and maintain records of patient test results.
- Report test results following protocols alerting providers and/or nurses about abnormal and/or critical results.
- Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the technical consultant, clinical consultant, or director.
- Perform technical laboratory functions including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology, and immunology.
- Prepares samples for pre-transfusion testing; issues and inspects components for transfusion purposes.
- Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and procedures, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibration and maintenance performed.
- Follow the laboratory’s established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
- Comply with all laboratory policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
- Ability to prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols.
- Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to perform a range of clinical laboratory tests and chemical analysis on biological samples.
- Ability to draw intravenous and peripheral blood.
- Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and tests.
- Knowledge of medical laboratory equipment uses and maintenance.
- Knowledge of medical laboratory safety, cleanliness, and infection control policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Accuracy – Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
- Communication – Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
- Communication – Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Computer Skills – Proficient ability to use a computer and electronic medical records.
- Confidentiality – Maintain patient, team member, and employer confidentiality. Comply with all HIPAA regulations.
- Customer Service Oriented – Friendly, cheerful, and helpful to patients and others. Ability to meet patients and others needs while following policies and procedures.

EQUIPMENT:
Operate laboratory equipment including centrifuges, microscopes, pipettes, timers, thermometers, and storage equipment according to the laboratory’s policies and procedures and manufacturer’s specifications.
Operate computer-based systems including electronic medical record systems, laboratory equipment software and hardware, web-based reference laboratory websites, and Microsoft suite applications including Outlook, Excel, and Word while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
Requirements:EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous medical laboratory experience preferred.
- Associate degree and MLT(ASCP) or AMT certification required.

- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a related field required.
- MLS(ASCP) or AMT certification preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Environmentally controlled laboratory environment
- Fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations
- Frequent exposure to bodily fluids
- Possible exposure to infections specimens, communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a laboratory and medical environment.
- May wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, gowns, and masks.
- Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, and other members of the public and health system.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Frequent standing, walking, grasping, carrying, and speaking.
- Occasional sitting, reaching, bending, and stooping.
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds, with assistance if needed
- Frequent use of computer, keyboard, copy and fax machine, and phone.
- Moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noise

This position could have access to patient confidential records and must comply with HIPAA regulations as well as Compliance Policies.
