This position splits its time between reviewing supporting documentation and requests for accommodations from students at the undergraduate and graduate level; following the interactive process to determine appropriate accommodations; providing students guidance on how to access support services; and providing executive functioning coaching all in an effort to empower students to be independent, successful, and confident learners. This is a 20 hour/week 9month/year position reporting to the Director of Access Resources.
Essential Job Functions
- Review and interpret relevant documentation (including Psychoeducational and Neuropsychological evaluations) and conduct student interviews necessary to gather all relevant information needed to determine appropriate accommodations.
- If approved, develop an appropriate letter of accommodation.
- Manage a student caseload (determined by the Director). Provide students with weekly meetings focusing on individualized study, social-emotional, and executive functioning skills to meet student needs.
- With the director, work with students, faculty, staff, and other constituents to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Encourage students’ use of support services available throughout campus including Baird Health and Counseling, Harrington Center, Res Ed, peer/professional tutoring at the SLC, and the library.
- Stay informed of disability laws, maintain confidentiality according to FERPA, and maintain detailed, confidential, and accurate notes about student meetings and progress.
- Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communications, research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Work with varied student situations professionally and confidentially.
- Partner with the Director in developing policies and maintaining compliance with CSC policies, ADA as amended, Section 504, and federal and state laws.
- Assist in proctoring accommodated exams. Coordinate peer-note takers and distribution of class notes while maintaining student confidentiality.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or in a related field; Master’s preferred.
- 1-3 years’ experience in areas of special education or working with students with disabilities in a Higher Education setting: training that includes college-level disability services, disability assessment, and ADA/504 compliance.
- Ability to communicate with a wide constituency and target written communication to specific audiences (faculty, students, staff, families, and community members).
- Broad base of technical knowledge and skills related to organizing and maintaining records systems.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software packages as needed.
- An understanding of disability and confidentiality regulations pertaining to higher education.
- Sensitivity and respect for cultural, educational, gender, religious, racial, and socioeconomic differences.
