Construction Maintenance Specialist ( Fort Carson)
Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking a dedicated Construction Maintenance Specialist to support the operation, maintenance, and expansion of our water and wastewater infrastructure across the Pikes Peak region, with a primary focus on Fort Carson. This is a unique opportunity to work with complex systems that ensure the safe and efficient transport of sanitary and industrial effluents in compliance with environmental regulations.
In this role, you will perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks to support departmental construction projects, including excavation, utility infrastructure maintenance, and inspection. The ideal candidate will have experience operating heavy equipment, working with underground utilities, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
Please note that the starting rate of pay for this position is set at $32.92/hour, followed by an increase to $34.56/hour after completion of the probationary period (typically 6 months).
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform semi-skilled construction activities to support departmental projects
- Operate hand tools such as jackhammers, directional drills, and shovels for digging and landscaping
- Drive and operate commercial vehicles and heavy equipment, including vac-trucks, backhoes, and skid-loaders
- Locate and map underground utilities using appropriate tools and systems
- Assist in troubleshooting, repairing, installing, or replacing utility infrastructure
- Support quality control personnel and pipeline inspectors with inspections and routine monitoring
- Monitor contractors and subcontractors to ensure adherence to utility standards and best practices
- Obtain and manage excavation permits and applications
- Respond to excavation appointments that may impact high-profile utility infrastructure
- Enforce clearance standards in line with Utilities' line extension and service standards
- Inspect utility infrastructure during excavation and before backfilling
- Document infrastructure using GIS application systems
- Conduct contractor site visits to verify compliance with excavation requirements
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in construction, utility maintenance, or a related field
- Proficiency in operating heavy equipment and commercial vehicles
- Familiarity with GIS systems and underground utility mapping
- Strong understanding of safety protocols and utility standards
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; CDL is preferred, or the ability to obtain within one year of hire
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or 10-20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
What you can expect working at Fort Carson:
The Construction Maintenance Specialist will assist in performing and supporting activities related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of Fort Carson's water and wastewater distribution and collection systems.
Under the Intergovernmental Support Agreement (IGSA), Colorado Springs Utilities is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of Fort Carson’s water, electric and gas infrastructure. Currently, however, wastewater will become a 4th service January 1, 2026, this position will begin as soon as possible. Pursuant to the IGSA, this position will support operations and maintenance of Fort Carson’s distribution and collection systems up to and including complex infrastructure designed to transport and treat sanitary and industrial effluents in compliance with environmental regulations, as well as operating wastewater and industrial wastewater systems and mainlines. In this role, you will support the installation, repair, and maintenance of critical infrastructure and assets, including water mains, hydrants, pressure-reducing/regulating valves, flow control valves, fire hydrants, and pressure tanks with utilities best practices.
This position will be part of a water and wastewater crew that is responsible for managing the construction and maintenance of new developments, commercial construction, outage response, and providing construction crew oversight in both distribution and collections at Fort Carson under the IGSA. You will work onsite at Fort Carson but may be called to support Colorado Springs Utilities’ water and wastewater distribution and collection systems construction crews as needed.
Within this role, you will be part of a team that is responsible for a wide variety of technical duties and will ensure that all activities adhere to Colorado Springs Utilities' Safety Rules and Construction Standards. Additionally, the position requires regular interaction with numerous internal and external customers as well as proficient management of resources, equipment, and personnel to ensure the successful completion, performance, and review of the water and wastewater work.
