Position Summary
Reporting to the Co-Directors, Ann F. Kaplan Women’s Initiative, Institute of Global Politics, the Assistant Director will:
(1) Manage the development of policy research, publications, and convenings for the Women's Initiative under the leadership and guidance of the Co-Directors.
(2) Liaise with personnel across the Institute of Global Politics and Columbia University, as well as with partners and influencers in the broader policy community, to advance and amplify the work of the Women's Initiative.
Responsibilities
- Conduct policy research on domestic and global women's issues and draft memoranda, briefs, and other written analyses.
- Provide substantive support for publications, including research, drafting, editing, and data interpretation.
- Collect, manage, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to inform policy outputs and initiatives.
- Assist in the development of speeches, talking points, and other communications materials.
- Manage and coordinate projects, maintaining a tracker of weekly, monthly, and annual deliverables to ensure the timely execution of Initiative priorities.
- Supervise student workers, including assigning tasks and reviewing work products.
- Plan and coordinate policy-related events, including convenings, panel discussions, and external engagements.
- Collaborate with the IGP Executive Director and staff on strategic and programmatic priorities.
- Partner with the Columbia SIPA Communications and External Relations team to support the visibility and outreach of the Women's Initiative.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in public policy, law, social sciences, or a related field, with a minimum of 3+ years of relevant professional experience.
- Substantive knowledge of public policy; expertise in women's issues is preferred.
- Exceptional professional writing skills across a range of formats, including reports, briefing memoranda, presentations, and professional correspondence. Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality written work requiring minimal revision.
- Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, with the ability to serve as a knowledgeable and effective representative of the Women's Initiative leadership within and outside the University.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, manage competing priorities, solve problems, and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and related web content management platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in public policy, law, social sciences, or a related field strongly preferred.
- Relevant professional experience in public policy, research, government, or a related field preferred.
