Job Summary:
This is a part-time, non-exempt position. Duties, hours, and responsibilities may be adjusted as needed. The Part-Time Bus Driver provides safe, reliable, and professional transportation services for students, employees, athletic teams, and visitors while ensuring compliance with all applicable traffic laws, College policies, and passenger safety requirements. The position focuses on the safe operation of college-owned buses and passenger vans, as well as on maintaining accurate transportation documentation. This role also involves maintaining College vehicles as needed.
Position Duties:
- Safely operate College buses and passenger vans to transport students, employees, athletic teams, visitors, and other authorized passengers.
- Ensure all passengers follow established safety guidelines and College expectations while the vehicle is in operation.
- Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and promptly report any mechanical, maintenance, or safety concerns.
- Operate vehicles safely under varying weather and road conditions while exercising sound judgment and defensive driving practices.
- Maintain a clean and professional appearance of yourself and assigned vehicles. Ensure vehicle cleanliness during trips.
- Maintain accurate mileage logs, inspection reports, and trip documentation, and promptly report all accidents, incidents, or unusual occurrences.
- Assist passengers with loading and unloading luggage, equipment, and approved cargo as appropriate.
- Coordinate with the supervisor regarding scheduled vehicle maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Maintain professional working relationships with students, employees, coaches, vendors, visitors, and other College stakeholders.
- Adhere to all Department of Transportation regulations, College transportation procedures, and College policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to drive and maintain all fleet vehicles.
- Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs. A working knowledge of all road signs and other common driving practices, including the ability to observe set speed limits at all times.
- Ability to perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Ability to learn and comprehend information from Procedures manuals and other materials.
- Ability to work independently, as well as on a team.
- Have basic computer skills.
- Ability to work and maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
- Good communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work. Work well under deadline pressures.
- Excellent human relations skills. Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and diverse populations.
Required Qualification:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with necessary endorsements (Class B minimum, passenger, air brakes).
- Valid DOT Physical Certificate.
- CPR certification (preferred)
- Minimum of one year of bus driving or equivalent professional driving experience.
- Clean driving record (no DUI convictions within the last 15 years).
Supervisory Requirements: None.
Physical Requirements:
- Must pass a yearly DOT physical.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.
- Must be able to physically move through the bus.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to move freely around the campus and outreach centers.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, push, climb, and reach and grasp as required to perform responsibilities.
- Ability to work on the computer for long periods of time.
Work Environment:
Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Risk is involved with travel on main highways, side streets, and rural roads during business travel, including evenings and weekends.
