Curry College invites applications for a part-time Head Coach for our Softball team. Under the direction of the Director of Athletics, the Head Coach is responsible for all aspects of the development and administration of a successful NCAA Division III Intercollegiate Sport Program. The program will be conducted in accordance with all College and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), CNE (Conference of New England),) rules, regulations, and policies. The Head Coach will supervise and delegate certain functions to the Assistant Coaches.
The Head Coach is a professional employee of the College with a primary duty of teaching and instructing student-athletes in the specific sport that is being coached. The vast majority of the Head Coach's time is spent on coaching/teaching duties, while a minority of the Head Coach's time is spent performing administrative duties.
Essential Responsibilities:
Coaching/Teaching Duties:
- Teach and develop sport-specific skills in a successful, safe and prudent manner;
- Create, present, and maintain records of up-to-date lesson plans for pre-season/season practice drills and procedures detailing the desired goals to be achieved;
- Schedule practice and game preparation sessions; conduct post game analysis and incorporate into lesson plans;
- Conduct research of opposing teams;
- Initiate new ideas and methods to improve the program in support of the College goal of a successful conference and attainment of a regional level Intercollegiate Associate ranking relevant to the specific sport.
Team Success
- Build student athletes' respect for themselves, their teammates, their opponents, their coaches, and their sport. Communicate to student athletes in a positive manner;
- Assure proper safety equipment and safety practices are implemented; Schedule practices; assure skills and game strategies are effectively taught;
- Develop commitment of team members to team success;
- Work with Assistant Coaches on game preparation, film review, practice scheduling.
Recruitment
- Partner with the Admission Department in the recruiting of student athletes; provide recruiting reports as requested by Admission and follow Admission and recruiting procedures as required by Admission;
- Arrange and attend recruiting visits to schools, games, and recruiting events, maintaining full and accurate records of recruiting events;
- Maintain recruiting database with up-to-date contact information for prospective students and coach contacts, as well as record of all communications and interactions with recruits;
- Supervise recruiting efforts of Assistant coaches;
- Arrange on-campus visits for recruits and meet with prospective students and their families; arrange overnight visits and assure prospective students are appropriately supervised;
- Participate in Admission Open Houses, Accepted Student Day, and other events;
- Source possible recruits through phone, email and on-line research;
- Assist in preparation of recruitment mailings;
- Work closely with Admission Counselors through the Admission cycle and provide reports to Admission as requested.
Student Success and Retention
- Monitor academic success of student athletes and encourage high achievement;
- Respond effectively to concerns expressed by student athletes about athletic and non-athletic issues;
- Keep Athletic Director informed of concerns raised by student-athletes;
- Refer students to appropriate office on campus to address concerns (Academic Support, Counseling, Residence Life, Financial Aid, Athletic Training). Follow-up when appropriate;
- Monitor student performance with Student Affairs, and encourage participation and compliance with campus standards.
Team administration
- Attend all Athletic Department coaches meetings;
- Support other teams, and other Athletic units (Sports Information, Athletic Training);
- Complete all paperwork in a timely manner regarding rosters, purchase orders, meal expenses, eligibility forms, reimbursements, end-of-season reports;
- Aid the Athletic Training and Sports Information departments in getting material (from players or coaches) that they need;
- Arrange all transportation, food and lodging for away-games;
- In charge of distribution, collection, and inspection of all related equipment;
- Coordinate Work-study assignments as needed (Team Laundry, office work, etc.);
- Meet regularly with Athletic Director.
Community Outreach
- Arrange Service projects for team (at least two events each season);
- Maintain records and inform Institutional Advancement and Athletic Director prior to all events. (Secure approval of events from Athletic Director in advance.);
- Assure that team presents a positive image both externally and on campus;
- Initiate alumni involvement when appropriate;
- Initiate Fund-raising ideas to help supplement your funds;
- Conduct an ongoing recruitment program through a variety of methods, both on and off the court with the goal to attract, select and encourage enrollment of high caliber student-athletes.
Additional Functions:
- Comply with the sport specific intercollegiate affiliation policy, conference rules, and department policy and procedures;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics;
- Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy;
- Supervise weight room for safety purposes when needed.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in a related discipline from an accredited four-year collegiate institution.
- Intercollegiate sports specific experience.
- Experience in coaching and knowledge of the fundamentals, tactics, and strategies of coaching intercollegiate sports with ability to recruit talented players for the program.
- Knowledgeable and current on all College rules and regulations concerning eligibility and recruiting related to specific sport that is being coached.
- Ability to handle emergency situations involving students.
- Current driver's license and good driving record.
- Ability to travel.
- Ability to work evening and weekends and some holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
