Position Summary
The Extended Day Nurse supports the health, safety, and well-being of students enrolled in the Extended Day Program at The Basilica School of Saint Mary. This position is responsible for providing medical care and first aid during after-school hours, responding to student health concerns and emergencies, administering medications in accordance with school policy, and maintaining accurate health documentation.
The Extended Day Nurse serves as a calm, professional, and compassionate presence within the program and works collaboratively with Extended Day staff, school administration, and families to ensure students receive attentive care in a safe and nurturing environment aligned with the values of the Catholic faith.
Primary Responsibilities
Provide first aid and basic nursing care to students during Extended Day hours
Assess student illnesses and injuries and determine appropriate next steps, including parent communication and dismissal when necessary
Maintain open communication with Extended Day staff using the walkie-talkie system at all times during program hours
Ensure the nurse’s office walkie-talkie volume remains audible to receive emergency calls and respond promptly to staff communication
Confirm via walkie-talkie when a student has safely arrived in the nurse’s office and notify staff when students are returning to their assigned group
Keep the nurse’s office accessible and maintain the office light on throughout Extended Day hours
Notify staff immediately if stepping away from the office temporarily and communicate when returning; place temporary signage on the office door when necessary
Administer medications in accordance with physician instructions, school policy, and diocesan guidelines
Monitor students with allergies, chronic health conditions, or other medical concerns to ensure proper accommodations and care
Determine when a student is too ill to remain in the Extended Day Program and contact parents for immediate pickup in accordance with Extended Day policies
Supervise ill students in the nurse’s office until parent arrival when necessary
Meet with parents upon arrival to discuss student illness, injury, treatment provided, and any follow-up recommendations
Communicate with the Director of Extended Day regarding students who remain in the nurse’s office after 5:00 PM and coordinate transfer of supervision, if needed
Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of all student visits, including illnesses, injuries, ice packs, bandages, medication administration, and parent communication
Ensure medical logs are completed daily and remain accessible for state licensing review through program closing hours
Maintain organization and oversight of medical supplies, emergency medications, first aid kits, and student care items
Access and secure prescription medications, EpiPens, and emergency supplies according to school procedures
Be familiar with the location and operation of AED devices located throughout campus
Support a safe, respectful, and faith-filled environment consistent with the mission of The Basilica School of Saint Mary
Qualifications
Current Registered Nurse (RN)
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required
Prior pediatric, school nursing, camp nursing, or childcare experience strongly preferred
Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required
Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills
Ability to remain calm, professional, and responsive in emergency situations
Experience maintaining confidential medical records and incident documentation
Ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and administration
Commitment to supporting the mission and Catholic identity of The Basilica School of Saint Mary
Must be able to pass a background check and complete VIRTUS child protection training
