Title: Maintenance & Grounds Supervisor
Reports To: Pastor, Business Manager, School Principal
Parish: St. Jude Catholic Church, New Lenox, Illinois
Position: Full-Time, Exempt, Benefited
6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Summary
To ensure the smooth, safe, and efficient maintenance and operation of the St. Jude Catholic Church and School
Campus by overseeing the cleanliness, repair, and overall upkeep of all facilities and grounds. This includes
supervising and supporting maintenance staff in daily tasks, major event setups, snow removal, seasonal
projects, lawn care, and weekend event coverage, while also performing routine to mid‑level maintenance work.
Responsibilities encompass the preventative, routine, and emergency maintenance of parish buildings and
property, including key systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security, fire safety, energy management, and
overall grounds maintenance.
Functions
- As supervisor, be available via cell phone 24-7 in case of emergency.
- During school hours, wear a walkie-talkie for quick communication.
- Open church and school and be ready for the day.
- Make sure parish bathrooms are clean every morning, especially after weekend masses.
- Meet with Principle to ensure school needs are being met with set-ups, breakdowns, cleanups, etc.
- Handle school emergency clean ups promptly.
- Respond to facility emergencies promptly and coordinate with vendors as needed.
- Inspect parish buildings (church, office, school, meeting rooms, etc.) to identify maintenance issues, develop action plans with the Business Manager, and perform routine maintenance, repairs, and upgrades using basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry skills; maintain overall facility upkeep and report any needed or major repairs to Business Manager.
- Any work needing outside vendors should include obtaining three competitive quotes before approval of work can proceed.
- Coordinate efforts of all maintenance personnel with the assistance of the Business Manager to keep facilities clean and in good repair by using available resources wisely, including financial resources. Find ways that are cost effective to save money when possible.
- Responsible for knowing and utilizing resources available when tasks require the use of a licensed professional such as electrician, plumber, or heating/ac contractors.
- Stay abreast of the requirements of Diocese and governmental regulations for safe operations of equipment and facilities.
- Maintain accurate records of preventive and corrective maintenance for equipment and facilities, including repairs, warranties, inspections, and service calls.
- Handle all inspections and keep records.
- Assist business manager with developing and maintaining long-range maintenance and any capital improvements that need to be made.
- Document, coordinate, and oversee maintenance requirements, including pest control, landscaping services, snow removal, equipment testing, and security systems.
- Ensure School, Franciscan Hall, Church and Parish Office are cleaned daily.
- Manage maintenance requests, written or emailed, by completing tasks or assigning them to other maintenance/custodial personnel.
- Walk grounds and help maintain the landscaping, clean, fix, and address any issues. This should be a weekly ongoing effort.
- Assist with clearing walkways of snow and salting, during shift and mopping up water at entrances of church, parish office, school and FH.
- Responsible for prompt and positive response to building issues and complaints and ensure that problems are solved promptly.
- Assist Business Manager with scheduling maintenance staff for after-hour work, verifying time sheets and daily checklists.
- May need to be present for some school or Parish weekend and evening events.
- Be on call for snow removal some weekends in the winter.
- Perform manual labor and janitorial tasks when needed.
- Any other duties as assigned by Pastor, Business Manager, or Principal.
Knowledge & Skills
- Basic knowledge of cleaning and sanitation.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and other repairs as needed.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to recognize and set priorities.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Experience is preferable but not required.
- Demonstrate an ability to lead and manage people in a Christ - like manner.
- Be available by phone 24/7 in the event of an emergency.
- Assign tasks as necessary to other maintenance workers.
- Works with maintenance team to rotate weekends to set-up for special events, and snow removal.
- Heavy Lifting of 50+lbs and shoveling snow may be required.
- Ability to work as a team player, able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a timely manner.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years in facility management, building maintenance, or related field.
- Proficiency with basic office technology (email, spreadsheets, scheduling software).
- Flexible and dependable, willing to adjust with grace to changing parish needs.
- Ability and willingness to perform manual labor and janitorial tasks when needed.

Salary
$53,000 – $63,000 annual, depending on experience and qualifications.
