Title: TEACHER AIDE (SPED 1:1)
Reports To: Department Chair
Duration: 10 Months
Purpose Statement
The job of Teacher Aide (SPED 1:1) is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program within assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with at-risk students one-on-one; following educational and specific behavioral plans; documenting students' daily activities; and modeling appropriate behaviors and interactions with student and staff.
Essential Functions
Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g. diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs.
Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students for the purpose of maintaining students' personal hygiene.
Carries out test modifications (e.g. reading questions, alternate locations, etc.) for the purpose of making all assignments as successful as possible.
Documents student's daily activities (e.g. behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times, etc.) for the purpose of completing daily logs and student's hourly activities.
Implements under the supervision of assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
Models conversation, manners, cleanup activities, listening, self-management skills and everyday interactions for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
Monitors student's daily schedule and behavior plan (e.g. class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite, changing clothes, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
Provides instruction to students, under direction (e.g. math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) for the purpose of implementing IEP goals; assisting in adapting to mainstream classroom/s; and ensuring students success.
Remains with student at all times for the purpose of providing for the safety of student, removing student when necessary and de-escalating situations outside the classroom.
Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
Reviews daily and long term assignments for the purpose of keeping students aware of assignments and giving them a preview of what is ahead.
Other Functions
Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
Communicates teacher/s, parents and a variety of health care professionals (e.g. Speech Language Pathologist, nurses, therapists, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
