This position is designed for an experienced technician who is ready to take greater ownership of jobsite production and crew performance. The Lead Data Technician will work closely with the Foreman and Project Manager to coordinate daily activities, provide technical direction to other technicians, maintain quality and safety standards, and help ensure projects are completed efficiently and on schedule.
The ideal candidate is a strong low-voltage technician who leads by example, communicates effectively, takes ownership of their work, and is comfortable providing direction and training to less-experienced technicians.
- Lead and provide day-to-day direction to small crews of Data Technicians on active commercial construction sites.
- Assist the Foreman with coordinating daily work assignments, manpower, installation priorities, and project workflow.
- Pull, route, dress, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and label CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A, and fiber-optic cabling.
- Install and maintain cable support systems, pathways, J-hooks, ladder rack, sleeves, and other structured cabling infrastructure.
- Install low-voltage devices and equipment including WAPs, speakers, projectors, displays, card readers, access-control devices, electric strikes, locks, crash bars, transmitters, receivers, and DAS equipment.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, riser diagrams, specifications, and installation details.
- Lay out work for technicians and ensure installations are performed according to drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and FSG standards.
- Monitor crew productivity and proactively identify issues that could impact schedule, quality, or project completion.
- Perform quality-control inspections of cabling, terminations, labeling, pathways, device installations, and completed work.
- Verify testing results and assist with troubleshooting failed cables, connectivity issues, damaged infrastructure, or installation deficiencies.
- Train, mentor, and develop junior technicians while reinforcing proper installation methods and industry best practices.
- Serve as a technical resource for technicians who need assistance troubleshooting installations or interpreting project requirements.
- Lead by example in productivity, professionalism, workmanship, attendance, and jobsite conduct.
- Coordinate field activities with the Foreman, Project Manager, General Contractor, other trades, and customer representatives as required.
- Help identify material, equipment, and tool requirements before they impact field production.
- Assist with receiving, staging, organizing, tracking, and maintaining project materials and equipment.
- Maintain accurate cable identification, labeling, testing documentation, punch lists, and project closeout information.
- Identify field conflicts and communicate potential problems to project leadership before they affect schedule or installation quality.
- Participate in project walkthroughs, inspections, punch-list completion, testing, commissioning, and turnover activities.
- Attend required safety meetings and actively enforce FSG and customer safety policies among assigned crew members.
- Ensure technicians are using appropriate PPE, tools, ladders, lifts, and equipment safely and correctly.
- Maintain a clean, organized, professional, and safe work environment.
- Assist other crews or project teams as necessary to meet overall project schedules and customer commitments.
- Perform hands-on installation work alongside the crew while maintaining responsibility for the quality and productivity of assigned work.
- Communicate daily progress, manpower needs, material shortages, installation challenges, and potential schedule impacts to field leadership.
- Perform additional project-related duties and leadership responsibilities as assigned by the Foreman, Superintendent, or Project Manager.
- 4+ years of commercial structured cabling or low-voltage installation experience required
- Previous experience serving as a Lead Technician, Crew Lead, senior technician, or informal field leader strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and provide direction to other technicians.
- Strong working knowledge of CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A, and fiber-optic cabling systems.
- Experience terminating, testing, labeling, troubleshooting, and documenting structured cabling installations.
- Experience with commercial low-voltage systems such as voice/data, wireless networks, A/V, access control, security, and DAS preferred.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, floor plans, riser diagrams, specifications, and construction documents.
- Working knowledge of commercial construction environments and coordination with other trades.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively organize work, prioritize tasks, and keep a crew productive.
- Ability to communicate professionally with coworkers, field leadership, customers, General Contractors, and other trades.
- Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality workmanship.
- Self-motivated and capable of working with limited supervision.
- Familiarity with industry standards and structured cabling best practices; BICSI knowledge or certification is a plus.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Reliable transportation to and from project locations.
- Ability to pass required background screening and drug testing.
- Ability to work day shifts, nights, weekends, or overtime when project schedules require.
- Ability to safely operate ladders, lifts, hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and other equipment commonly used in low-voltage construction.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform the physical duties associated with commercial construction work.
