Job Summary
The Specimen Processing Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operational and technical supervision of the Specimen Processing (Pre-Analytical) section within the Frederick Health Laboratory.
This individual: 1) oversees high-volume specimen receipt, accessioning, labeling, processing, and distribution to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant handling of all specimens 2) ensures adherence to CLIA,CAP and Joint Commission regulations, proper specimen integrity, and efficient workflow across the hospital departments and outreach clients 3) under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, provides frontline leadership by coordinating daily operations, supervising staff, resolving pre-analytical issues, and supporting standardized processes across the health system.
This leadership role ensures high-volume sample handling meets strict turnaround times while strictly adhering to quality control standards.
Core Responsibilities
Workflow & Operations Management
- Supervise daily operations of the specimen receiving and accessioning departments.
- Monitor incoming workflow from logistics to ensure a steady supply of processed specimens to technical testing departments.
- Manage turnaround times (TAT) by prioritizing urgent (STAT) samples and coordinating automated or manual sorting systems.
Example of Essential Functions:
- Supervises all services for clients, patients, and staff in the financial and operational activities of the Laboratory's client services' area.
- Oversees courier and clerical activities.
- Collaborates with pathologists and lab leadership to support clinical and safety initiatives.
- Oversees efficient lab operations and acts as a liaison to lab leadership.
- Maintains competency in policies, processes and serves as a subject matter expert.
- Develops and implements performance improvement processes to enhance patient and employee satisfaction.
- Leads the implementation of standards and systems to improve quality, efficiency, and timeliness
- Ensures compliance with all regulations and accreditation requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP, OSHA, FDA, The Joint Commission).
- Maintains effective communication and collaborates with leadership to deliver excellent customer service.
- Manages specimen processing, staffing, and resource utilization.
- Handles human resources tasks, including interviewing, promotions, development, performance evaluations, and conflict resolution.
- Ensures adherence to ethical conduct and compliance with relevant policies and laws.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Technical Literacy: Experience working with complex Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and MS Office applications.
- Problem Solving: Strong ability to handle sample discrepancies, data entry errors, and complex client inquiries under pressure.
- Communication: Highly developed oral and written skills to manage cross-departmental coordination and resolve interpersonal team conflicts.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:
- High School education or the equivalent required. Associates degree in a related field is preferred.
- Two years of related clinical or customer service experience required with at least two years of supervisory experience required.

Pay is based on experience, skills and education. If position is part-time, salary will be pro-rated based on scheduled hours. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on specialty if applicable. Non-Exempt positions may have shift differential and/or Overtime paid, if applicable.
Salary Range: $ $53,414.40 to $78,624.00 USD
