Job description:
Senior Construction Materials Testing Technician
Our firm is looking for a reliable and experienced technician(s) who would be responsible for ensuring (through observation and testing) that materials such soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and masonry meet project specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements through field inspections, sampling, and testing. GESTRA’s Senior-level roles typically involve more independence, complex testing, oversight of junior staff, and leadership. This position has potential for management responsibilities including report review and distribution, proposals, and marketing.
GESTRA Technicians travel throughout Southeastern Wisconsin and work primarily outdoors, throughout the year, with some laboratory testing.
On the Job:
- Work is generally Mon-Fri between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, with some Saturday and evening work.
- He or she would be primarily working out of the Milwaukee office, although occasionally supporting our Madison branch may be necessary.
- Perform and oversee routine to complex field and laboratory testing of construction materials, including Portland cement concrete, asphalt concrete, soil, aggregates, grout, masonry, and other materials.
- Conduct specific fresh concrete tests such as slump, air content, unit weight, temperature, and casting of specimens for compressive/flexural strength.
- Perform soil and aggregate compaction testing using nuclear density gauges to measure in-place density and moisture content.
- Sample materials at construction sites, manufacturing plants, or laboratories; monitor placement of materials (e.g., backfilling, reinforcing steel, concrete pours, asphalt placement).
- Inspect and verify conformance of materials and construction processes to project plans, specifications, and standards (e.g., ASTM, ACI, DOT, AWS, IBC).
- Prepare detailed daily reports, data sheets, test results, and documentation; maintain accurate records (often automated).
- Train, assign work to, and supervise junior technicians or staff; provide guidance on testing procedures.
- Calibrate and maintain testing equipment; ensure proper safety protocols, especially for nuclear gauges.
- Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, project managers, and agency representatives.
- Assist with project execution, read/interpret construction plans, and support quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) efforts.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED
- Experience: 3–5+ years in construction materials testing or related paraprofessional engineering work.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and have a good driving record as well willingness to drive to job sites.
- Must pass pre-employment, non-DOT drug screening.
- Clear and concise English communication skills both written and verbally.
- Certifications (preferred):
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (or higher).
- Special Inspectors (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry Construction, Soils, Others.)
- Nuclear gauge/density gauge certification and radiation safety training.
- NICET certifications in Construction Materials Testing (e.g., Asphalt, Concrete, Soils).
- Additional: OSHA 10-Hour (or 30-Hour) Construction Safety, plus state-specific DOT or agency certifications.
Skills and Abilities:
· Strong knowledge of testing standards and procedures.
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather, lift 20–50+ lbs. (repetitively) and perform physical tasks.
· Proficiency in computations, report writing, and basic computer skills (data entry, spreadsheets).
· Good interpersonal skills for interacting with site teams.
· Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites.
· Maintain and care for vehicles and equipment.
Preferences
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
- HTCP Certifications (WisDOT project requirement)
- Prior DOT testing experience
- ACI Certifications
- Special Inspector Certifications
- NICET Certifications
- Nuclear density gauge safety trained.
Compensation
- Footwear reimbursement (up to $100 annually) and safety equipment will be provided. (Candidate will provide own construction appropriate clothing)
- Pay (minimum of $25/Hour) based on experience and job performance (salaried compensation and benefits, potentially, for those meeting Management level requirements).
