Position: Secondary Assistant Band Director

Reports to: Building Principal and Head Band Director

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Job Summary: The Secondary Assistant Band Director supports the Head Band Director in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive secondary instrumental music program. This position provides high-quality instruction to middle and/or high school instrumental music students while assisting with rehearsals, performances, student development, and program operations. The Assistant Band Director works collaboratively to promote musical excellence, student achievement, and a lifelong appreciation of music.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality instrumental music instruction aligned with Michigan Academic Standards for Music.
• Teach band classes and sectional rehearsals as assigned by the building principal and Head Band Director.
• Support the musical growth and development of students through individual and ensemble instruction.
• Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
• Assess student progress and maintain accurate attendance and grade records.
• Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment.

Program Support

• Assist the Head Band Director in directing middle school and/or high school concert bands and other assigned instrumental ensembles.
• Assist with rehearsals, concerts, festivals, competitions, marching band, pep band, jazz band, chamber ensembles, and other performances as assigned.
• Help coordinate performance logistics, transportation, equipment, music, and event preparation.
• Assist in recruiting and retaining students for the instrumental music program.
• Support students preparing for solo and ensemble festivals, honor bands, auditions, and other enrichment opportunities.
• Collaborate with district music staff to support a vertically aligned instrumental music program.

Classroom Management

• Maintain appropriate standards of student conduct consistent with district policies.
• Supervise students during rehearsals, performances, travel, and school-sponsored events.
• Promote a respectful and supportive learning environment that encourages student success.

Equipment and Inventory

• Assist with maintaining the music library, instruments, uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
• Help coordinate instrument maintenance and repairs.
• Support inventory management and preparation of equipment for performances and rehearsals.

Communication and Collaboration

• Work collaboratively with the Head Band Director, administrators, colleagues, students, and families.
• Communicate effectively regarding student progress, program activities, and performance expectations.
• Participate in department meetings, staff meetings, and professional learning opportunities.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain current knowledge of best practices in music education and instructional strategies.
• Participate in district and school professional development.
• Support district initiatives and contribute positively to the school community.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.

Qualifications

Required

• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate Music Education endorsement.
• Knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy and conducting techniques.
• Ability to instruct students on a variety of band instruments.
• Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a music education team.

Preferred

• Experience assisting with secondary instrumental music programs.
• Experience with marching band, jazz band, pep band, or other co-curricular ensembles.
• Experience coordinating performances and student events.
• Familiarity with music technology and instructional software.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and conduct rehearsals for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and move instruments and equipment up to 40 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to travel between district buildings and performance venues as required.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends for concerts, festivals, competitions, and other school-sponsored events.

Work Environment

The work is performed in classrooms, rehearsal spaces, auditoriums, stadiums, and other school facilities. The position requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends for performances, festivals, competitions, and other school-sponsored activities.
