Technician II – Substation
POSITION SUMMARY:
GRDA is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Substation Technician level 2 (apprentice) at its Transmission Headquarters location near Pryor OK. The position is responsible for but not limited to installing, maintaining, testing, and inspecting transformers, different types of high voltage circuit breakers, insulators, voltage regulators, PTs, CTs, CCVTs, various types of switches and other equipment found in high voltage electrical substations. Must be comfortable working around high voltage and heights daily.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Reports directly to Substation Lead and Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Install, test, and perform maintenance on high voltage transformers, mobile substations, various types of circuit breakers, switches, PTs, CTs, voltage regulators, and other equipment found in high voltage substations.
- Applicants must be able to work safely in harsh weather conditions for extended hours during emergency outages and other situations. Applicants will be required to respond to frequent afterhours call outs.
- Repair equipment found to be faulty in accordance with manufacture recommendations. Replace equipment when found to be cost effective or enhance reliability and safety conditions.
- Follow Federal, State and Local laws concerning EPA and other regulations including but not limited to PCBs in oil, SF6 gas emissions and oil containment.
- Secure equipment and materials needed to complete a project and check it out through the warehouse using the correct project codes and work order numbers.
- Help ensure all projects are performed in the safest manner in accordance with GRDA, APPA and other governing rules and regulations.
- Work with various divisions and departments in maintaining all aspects of GRDA system. Professional accountability is required. Coordinate with other crafts on logistics and assigned projects.
- This position must be able to correspond in a professional manner with other departments while working together and be professional when working with customers.
- Creates, organizes, and maintains records for assigned oversight areas of the Substation department.
- Will be required to be on call or available for call outs to substations or other GRDA facilities that include high voltage equipment or communications equipment at any time.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
- 1 to 3 years or a combination of qualifying experience or course of study in substation maintenance, electrical or mechanical at a recognized trade, technical, vocational school, or a combination of electrical or mechanical experienced working in or around high voltage equipment.
- Highschool Diploma required.
- High Voltage experience is preferred.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS, LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Must have a valid Oklahoma driver's license
- Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is preferred.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Safely operate equipment and vehicles including, but not limited to, aerial lifts, line trucks, cranes, back hoes, trenching machinery, utility vehicles, tractors, and other mobile equipment used in the construction and maintenance of high voltage substation equipment.
- Must be able to carry and operate a fire extinguisher, escape emergencies by running, and wear all required PPE (hardhat, FR clothing, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, safety goggles, hearing protection, fall protection). Complete all required web-based, textbook, and instructor led training courses.
- Good phone, computer and communication skills are overseen and required.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Will be required to stand and walk on cement floors, uneven ground, slippery surfaces, and open grating. Climb extending ladders, restricted overhead clearance ladders, scaffolding, stairs, and various other equipment.
- Must be able to walk, climb stairs, crawl, work from ladders and elevated platforms. Must not have a fear of heights, confined spaces, or working around high voltage equipment.
- Will be required to sit, bend, stoop, perform above shoulder work, and work with arms extended.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. (Test Equipment) from the floor level. He/She will also be required to push and pull heavy objects while standing, crouching, and in bent posture.
- A positive attitude, strong work ethics, self-starter and well-disciplined applicant is preferred.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS & SAFETY CONCERNS:
- Work locations ranges from an office environment to outdoors and/or indoors in a high noise/high temperature environment with work in confined spaces.
- Emergency High Voltage repair work will be required during system interruptions at all times even in inclement weather.
- Ensure gas associated with substation equipment is installed, transported, and maintained as required by EPA.
JOB LOCATION:
- Work is performed at Pryor Ok, Transmission Headquarters and over 100 substation locations throughout GRDA’s electrical system, primarily Northeast Oklahoma.
