The Fleet Mechanic plays a critical role in supporting telecommunications construction operations by ensuring the reliability, safety, and operational readiness of company-owned fleet vehicles and specialized construction equipment. This position is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of fleet assets utilized in fiber optic, utility, and infrastructure deployment projects. The role contributes directly to project productivity and uptime by minimizing equipment downtime and ensuring compliance with company, regulatory, and safety standards.
This is an hourly, non-exempt position reporting to the Fleet Manager.
Pay Rate: $30 - $40 per hour depending on experience Minimum Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude; experience with heavy equipment and fleet maintenance preferred.
- Ability to maintain accurate daily reports and documentation.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety practices, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain a clean and efficient work environment.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, vendors, and field personnel.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Fleet Maintenance & Repair
- Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on fleet vehicles and heavy construction equipment, including but not limited to:
- Diesel engines, transmissions, and drivetrains
- Hydraulic systems
- Electrical systems
- HVAC (A/C) systems
- Undercarriage components
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues, including overheating, fuel system failures, and fluid leaks.
- Perform major component replacements (e.g., engines, transmissions, differentials) as required.
- Conduct field repairs and shop-based maintenance to support active telecom construction projects.
- Ensure all equipment is returned to safe and operational condition in a timely manner.
- Safely operate construction and fleet equipment, including but not limited to:
- Mini excavators
- Skid steers
- Rock saws and micro-trenchers
- Bucket trucks and aerial lift equipment
- Assist with loading, unloading, and securing equipment in accordance with DOT and company safety standards.
- Support warehouse and field teams as needed to ensure efficient material and equipment flow.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations applicable to telecommunications construction environments.
- Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
- Identify, report, and mitigate potential safety hazards.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment at all times.
- Accurately complete and submit all required documentation in a timely manner, including:
- Daily work reports
- Maintenance and repair logs
- Purchase orders for expenditures exceeding company thresholds
- Fuel and parts receipts
- Maintain detailed records to support fleet tracking, compliance, and cost control.
- Safeguard company assets, including vehicles, tools, and equipment across job sites, yards, and facilities.
- Ensure proper use of company-issued vehicles, service trucks, and fuel cards.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition and ensure proper storage and organization.
- Coordinate with vendors for parts sourcing and repair services as needed.
- Maintain a professional appearance and represent the company positively in all interactions.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding repair status, delays, or equipment issues.
- Foster strong working relationships with team members, vendors, and field crews.
- Demonstrate flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, or respond to urgent field needs as required by project demands.
